My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Bonjour, mes amis! My name is Marcel Marceau but everyone calls me Marcel because everyone is my friend! I am a 3-5 year old poodle who was found as a stray in southern Indiana. I had been neutered and my coat was in good shape when I was found, but no one claimed me at animal control. My teeth are a tad dirty but my eyes are bright with no signs of cataracts. I moved into foster care while in Indiana and patiently waited for what would happen next. My wonderful temperament won me a chance at rescue and when I tested negative for heartworm, I began my journey up north to a foster home with Rover Rescue.

My foster mom could not get over how comical I am, so with me being a poodle and all, she renamed me Marcel Marceau after the famous French mime who performed for over 60 years. I'll come to any name because I love people. In fact, my foster mom says that is my major quirk. I love people so much that I get very anxious when left alone. I have separation anxiety but my foster mom reassures me that I have so much else going for me that we will work through it. For now, I am crated 20 minutes prior to my foster family leaving the house. This keeps me from associating the crate with them leaving. I will protest and bark, however my foster mom corrects me with a 'quiet' command. When I wouldn't be quiet, I was spritzed with water which I didn't like at all. I do quiet down and she softly tells me in a calm voice that I am being good. By the time my family leaves, I am settled in my crate. Due to this separation anxiety, I am not a good candidate for apartment living or families that are gone for most of the day.

Speaking of families, my foster family has been temperament testing me and they say I pass everything with flying colors! I live with 5 children and I think they are so cool! They call me "Marshmallow Marshmallow!" I am in great shape and have no problem keeping up with them in the backyard or on a walk. I make them laugh too and they never get tired of me joining them on their adventures. Due to Rover Rescue policy, I am not eligible for adoption to families with children under the age of 5 years. While I am no threat to them, it would be too tempting for a small child to want to carry me and possibly injure me. I have shown NO guarding behavior with food, toys, or people :) I make a beeline for the couch when we come in from outside but I will get off the couch when commanded and wait for the invitation. I love to sit and cuddle and before the people in the home know it, I am nestled contently in their lap. Did I mention I love people?!

I am also fabulous with other dogs. I am the barker in the group when someone comes to the door. Though the human Marcel Marceau practiced the 'art of silence', I practice the 'art of don't forget about me'. There is a squirt bottle by the front door as a reminder that I am only allowed to bark until told to be quiet. I'm smart and I learn quickly but some habits will take some time to retrain. I currently live with 2 resident large males and we got along right off the bat. There is a bossy female here who likes to keep me in line even when I am doing nothing wrong and I am a gentleman and walk away from her. I really like the other foster here, Miss Kitty, a 5 year old Yorkie. There have been a lot of dogs visiting and I liked all of them too. I can easily keep up with the rambunctious German Shepherd puppy and I am just as happy with the laid back senior dogs who just want to nap. There is also a cat here and I do great with him as well. As long as I am with another breathing soul, I am happy happy happy!!

I am neutered and up to date with my vaccinations including bordetella and rabies. I am crated when my family leaves for my safety due to having separation anxiety. I have earned the privilege to sleep loose at night. I prefer to sleep with my people but my foster parents have a 'no dogs on the bed' rule so I find the spot closest to them on the floor. My adoption fee is $200 which includes a certificate for a free micro chipping at a Rover Rescue veterinarian. If you are interested in learning more about me, call my foster mom Mary at 815-278-2102 for a phone interview. She will have some questions for you as well as answer any questions you may have about me.
