My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

DUKE is a 5 year old neutered black male Lab who weighs 44 pounds (should be more like 70 lbs). Poor Duke ended up in a rural shelter in horrible shape. Sad part is that his owner put him there in that shape - emaciated, nails so long they curled, sad and scared. The local SPCA intervened and asked for our help. Duke is very sweet and so grateful for any and all attention. We are getting him all fixed up and putting some meat on his bones - pictures coming soon of a new, improved, happier boy. Good with other dogs, good rider, good on leash. and he's approved for kids aged 10+.

Update (9/27): Boney Butt's Briefs: Doogie here. I tried a couch and it is GOOD! (FM has been spying on me with a dog cam from work and caught me sharing one with 2 different resident labs.) I tried a dog cookie and it was pretty good too and I have started to play some with toys. FM said I have a little bit of an underbite which makes me look like Curious George sometimes, whoever that is. I am really good friends with the resident GR, although they say most foster boys haven't liked him very much. FD told me to not let him teach me bad things like barking and singing for my supper. Big breakfast- gotta snooze.

Update (9/25): Duke Doogie here. I am afraid I don't know my LR# yet. Anyway, I rested well last night and had no accidents in my apartment. This morning I met the three resident retrievers- 2 that look just like me (except they are chubby) and one of those long haired yellow things. My four-legged foster sister had a beauty appointment so we haven't met yet. We all got along famously so I was invited into the house. Took a bunch of tries and a bunch of cheese, but I finally figured out the dog door. I heard meowing upstairs and kept looking for a cat, but FM said I am going to have to wait on those introductions. I found a couple dog beds to my liking and FM has said the sofas are for dogs too, but I think I will stay close to the ground for now. This picture shows what a boney-butt I have right now, but that should keep getting better. Oh, and I barked today, which made FM sigh.

Update (9/24): Duke Doogie reporting in from my fosters' after the first four hours. (They aren't too keen on 'Duke' so they've been calling me Doogie, which is fine- I need a new beginning.)
I showed how good I was on the leash and then I rode great in the car, although I stayed on the floorboards for the first 15 minutes of the drive until I figured out FM was a fairly safe driver. Then I got to check out my new digs- I have my own apartment until the other dogs are ready to meet me. They have been barking at me through the glass doors, but, although I am interested, I haven't answered back.

I got a new collar that jingles and got brushed- although FM said I need a b-a-t-h this weekend. I checked out the crate but wasn't very interested in staying in it. FM tried to get me to play with toys and I just wasn't ready so she got me to do zoomies with her in my apt. Afterwards I showed her my awesome lablean and that I knew how to sit and lay down when asked. After a couple hours, I went out and did a lot of business and then came in to eat. They teased me because I ate so slowly; once I get used to this place I am sure I will eat more quickly. Now I have crawled into my crate and am resting until it's time to go out again.

Update (9/23): Duke is becoming happier every day. He has gained weight and is doing so well. He loves to curl up on his cot with a fluffly blanket and is really starting to enjoy attention and love. It is so great to see! He will be going to a foster this week so stay tuned for more pics and info!

Update (9/08): Duke is flourishing with simple TLC and love! He has had a nice bath and boy the dirt that came off of him! He probably feels like a new man! He was so good in the tub and the love and trust that he has in his eyes is priceless. For a dog that was so neglected in his past, he has a great capacity for understanding that he is in a good place now. He amazingly is keeping his run spotless and loves his cot with a big fluffy blanket. Once his coat comes in and he gets some meat on his bone, he is going to be a handsome man!
