My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This is Mortimer! Likely the most kindhearted and unique dog you will ever meet! Mortimer (aka. Morty) is a cross between two beautiful breeds, German Shepherd and Basset Hound. We are not 100% sure exactly “how” that was possible but none the less we love the result and so does everyone he meets. Morty is a real head turner and compliment gatherer on his daily walks; it is truly a wonder how anyone could not want to keep him.

Mortimer came to us from a rural pound where he was deemed an unwanted stray. We find it amazing that no one would claim this beautiful dog, as he has been a joy to foster and such a sweetheart. However, we now look at this as an opportunity for Mortimer to find a loving forever home where he won’t be allowed to roam free and get lost. We can’t wait for Mortimer to find his forever family that will give him all the love and happiness that he will unquestionably return back.

Morty is a solid boy weighing 45lbs at approximately 8 months old and we don’t believe he will get much bigger then that. Mortimer does look like an ordinary German Shepherd until he stands up and you notice how short his little Basset Hound legs are! This cross not only creates one cool looking dog but it also is a mix of two wonderful personality types. Mortimer is a real gentle lush much like the Basset. He will dump his big head in your lap and flop over for belly rubs every second he gets if only your hands will keep up rubbing! Mortimer is also a very confident and clever dog much like the Shepherd. Morty was a bit of a Houdini escaping from his crate and getting into places he shouldn’t. However, with the proper supervision and crates we have been able to correct this behavior. Mortimer is a very faithful and kind dog we know he will become a loyal companion to a family that is willing to open up their home to him forever.

Two dachshunds have become foster siblings to Mortimer and they all get a long remarkably well. Mortimer has also been introduced some children at the local park, which he has acted very well with. We feel confident Mortimer will do well with a family with other pets or a child keeping in mind Morty is still a young dog and will need the proper training to learn his place. Mortimer would also do well as an only pet with the proper attention and exercise. Overall this an extremely calm and loving dog that is sure to fit in to many different types of families willing to love and take care of him like he deserves.

Mortimer is also completely house trained and is learning how to walk on a leash with a little guidance from his foster parents. Morty has also started learning some basic obedience skills and this will need to be continued with his new forever family as he continues to grow up. Ultimately we would love to keep this amazingly cool dog if we could! But since we can’t maybe it’ll be you?!
