My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Shelby is one of the sweetest dogs that I’ve met. She has a good nature and temperament and I would highly recommend her to anyone who is looking for a gentle yet active dog for their household. She is a beautiful dog with a great yellow coat of fur, lovely eyes and two different coloured ears! She loves to cuddle, to be petted and given “head massages”! Shelby is approximately 3 years old and currently weighs approximately 40 lbs.

Here is what else her foster family had to say:

Shelby was definitely someone’s dog in a previous life, although she could use some remedial training when it comes to walking on a leash (she tends to pull on the leash and wants to chase squirrels). Shelby is perfectly house trained, quiet in the house, and a gentle soul. She has been trained to wait at the top of the stairs before coming down, which is great.

I believe she is more comfortable around females. She was timid at first around my husband but quickly warmed up to him. We think Shelby may have been mistreated in the past by a male – particularly one who smelled of smoke since she has growled once or twice when around smokers. All in all, Shelby is a lovely dog and I wish we could keep her! Shelby was amazing around our 7-month old baby and our cat. In both cases, Shelby was calm and I was never concerned about her behavior. I think Shelby would benefit from a home that has a backyard where she can run freely, or regular access to leash-free dog parks.

We have a 7-month old baby and Shelby was amazing around him, even when the baby got excited. Shelby was very calm and if needed, would walk away from the situation when the baby got too excited or tried to pull on her tail. Shelby was generally good with other people - especially if they are introduced to her slowly and with one of us. On our walks, she has been interested in other dogs and humans. In the beginning, Shelby wanted to play with our cat and was a bit aggressive towards her. However, with corrective behavior she is fine with her now. They now co-exist in the house without issue. On walks, she is very interested in other dogs.

We originally crated Shelby at night and when we were out, but we no longer do that and she is fine alone in the house. Shelby enjoys playing catch with a ball. She loves going for walks but also loves chilling out on her dog bed. She loves to cuddle and to be petted – especially head massages! She is a very affectionate dog.

Shelby is very quiet in the home. She has good house manners. She eats her food but also will beg for human food and try to eat the cat's food (wet food) when the cat is finished with it (but doesn't try to compete when the cat is eating). She knows a few commands - sit, come, off. She is fully house-trained. She is nearly leash trained. She has a tendency to pull forward on the leash and to want to run after squirrels - she will jump on them when she has a chance.

Shelby is a great dog. She is affectionate and calm - but also has an energetic playful side to her! She needs a bit of training still so any one who adopts her should be prepared for this. However, she is a lovely dog and would be a great addition to anyone's household. I think she would be best for a family with a back yard. Ideally, it would be best to place Shelby with someone with time to give her regular long walks and play ball with her.

If you think this girl would be a good choice for your situation, please submit an application for consideration.
