My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Adopted 11/1/14!!!

I have an Adoption Pending! But I hope you will consider one of our other great dogs. Thank you.

10/10/14 Update: Goose was recently transported to his foster family in New England. One of Sunshine’s volunteers met Goose at the transport stop and she had this to say about him. "I had the great fortune of meeting Goose today and what a wonderful meeting it was! He came down the ramp a bundle of energy and his feet hardly touched the ground after that. In my experience as a blind dog owner, Goose is extremely high functioning and has learned to compensate by using his other senses, an amazing feat considering the lack of guidance and human and canine interaction in his old life. He has almost no fear and throws all caution to the wind as he freely follows you without hesitation. Goose has a gorgeous silky red coat that is to die for and is a wiggly package of love; a puppy in the body of a 3 year old who only wants to please you. This sweet boy has a wonderful personality and I think his only goal in life is both giving and getting affection and having people to call his own. Goose is definitely more bold and inquisitive than cautious. The people around him couldn’t tell that he was blind and, had I not known it ahead of time, I probably would not have noticed either.”

According to Goose’s new foster Mom, Goose hops into the car easily with just a little pat on the seat or hatch area and rides very well. Because of the lack of direction he received in his formative years, proper manners are the focus and Goose is continuing to learn. He has made best friends with his 12 year old human brother and listens to him best when it comes to giving up both his love of jumping and his habit of seeking your attention by holding onto your arm. This pup has discovered the joys of leash walks and has learned his new environment so very quickly for a rescue who has never had an inside home let alone a vision impairment. He easily climbs steps but needs a little extra help going down which can be taught through commands, a firm hand on his leash and patience. Until he is fully comfortable doing the stairs by himself, his safety can be guaranteed through the use of baby gates. Once he knows where and how many steps there are, he will be bounding up and down on his own in no time. Goose’s foster family, one with limited blind dog experience, finds him easy to work with and eager to please.

It is still early, but it appears that Goose is a high energy dog and will do best with an active family. He has met his canine neighbors and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. He would love a canine brother or sister of his own to play with.

original Bio: Golden boy, Goose, was rescued from life on a chain where he lived as an outside dog for most of his 3 years. We wonder why these folks ever got a dog if this was the life he was relegated to live. Yet Goose holds no grudges. He is sweet and trusting of his human friends and just wants to be where ever they are. Goose has never met a stranger and greets everyone he meets with a wagging tail and lick on the face. He loves adults, kids, dogs, and even likes kitty friends.

Goose is a special boy who our Maker chose to live without full vision. You see, Goose was born with cataracts and his recent visit with the eye specialist revealed that he has progressive retinal degeneration. He can, perchance, see variations of dark and light, but Goose isn’t concerned about his ability to see. His sense of smell is wonderful and his hearing is keen. His foster mom is working on clicker training with him which gives Goose a sound to target and lets him know that the path to that sound is clear.

Sight impaired dogs like to run and play just as much as sighted dogs. They enjoy the same things that sighted dogs enjoy - walks, belly rubs, meal time, playtime and so much more! Goose likes to carry a stuffed toy around with him like a security blankie. Adding scents to toys for blind dogs (like vanilla) helps them find their toys. Scented toys and toys that jingle are great choices so they can even enjoy a game of fetch.

So what is the big difference between sighted dogs and sight impaired dogs? Sight impaired dogs see with their hearts.

Goose is up-to-date on his vaccinations, heartworm negative, and neutered. He will be ready to travel north to his forever family on Oct 4th. Will you be ready to welcome him into your heart and home?

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

SGRR Adoption Fees (subject to change)**
Puppies under 6 months $650
Young dogs 6 months - 6 years $550
Young dogs - Special Needs $450
Senior dogs 7 - 9 years $450
Seniors dogs 10 years and older $350
Senior dogs - Special Needs $300
Young Bonded Pairs $850
Senior Bonded Pairs $750

**Please note: The fees listed represent a slight increase and are effective for applications received after June 1 2014. We regret the need to increase the fees for our dogs, but found it necessary due to the increased costs we are faced with for each dog's care and placement.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.

Please be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog and make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
