My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Astro is a big puppy full of love and playful puppy energy. He is currently 11 months old and 85 lbs but he doesn't know his size and thinks he is a lap dog. He loves to be cuddled and played with and would enjoy another friendly dog or some older kids to toss a ball for him. He is okay with cats but if they run he will chase them. He has been very well socialized with people of all ages but he is still learning and will need further training to ensure he remains a confident, capable companion.

Here is what his foster family had to say:

If you are looking for a big, sweet, smart loveable kinda guy to call your own, Astro is your dog. He is an amazing dog already and with some time and patience will be a perfect addition to someone’s pack.

Astro is a moderate energy dog oozing with personality looking for a new best friend. He is a big lover and is VERY affectionate and playful. He loves to be outdoors and, in my opinion, would be a great dog to take to the dog park. He quite likes my dogs, although they are a bit older and he is still a puppy so his energy is a bit much for them at times. If there are other pets in the home they would need to be a good match for his energy level. He is a full contact kind of dog and I believe that he would love another dog to run and wrestle with.

There are cats in our home and although he is “ok” with them, he would probably be better in a home without cats as he wants to chase them. I don’t think he realizes how big he is and to him they are all just here for his entertainment. His intentions are innocent and he is not in any way vicious or aggressive…just big and goofy with lots of energy that some animals may not appreciate. Our cats don’t mind our dogs as they are older and don’t pay all that much attention to them. Astro really REALLY wants to make friends with them and play with them like he wants to play with the dogs. The cats are not so fond of this so I would not recommend a home with cats for him at this point.

Despite his puppy energy, Astro is a relatively good listener. He understands “no” and we have been working on “leave it” as he can be quite persistent at times. He will sit most of the time when asked and will give you his paw without being asked to do so. He is fully house trained and is the first foster dog that I have had to not piddle in my house at all! HOORAY ASTRO!

He enjoys chewing on his toys and has been very helpful at taking apart some of the toys in our doggie toy chest so toys that are “indestructible” so to speak would be best for him. He enjoys a good rawhide chew stick and when we go out I fill up a Kong with peanut butter and freeze it to keep him occupied in his crate. He is NOT crate trained, and I actually believe that he would be just fine left loose in the house; however, given the lack of appreciation for his energy from our other pets, we feel it is best for him to be crated when we are not home just to keep the peace between them and to give everyone a little space. He will go into his crate with a little encouragement but does protest once inside. I am not sure how quickly he settles but he seems to be relaxed when we come home and let him out so I don’t believe he is overly anxious while he is crated.

He sleeps in his bed in our room and, although he was a bit restless his first night here, he has slept quietly in his bed all night since them. He does come around and wake me up in the morning and LOVES to surprise me with a visit on the bed and some kisses and pawing when I am half asleep. Who doesn’t love a snuggly morning puppy?

Astro eats kibble and it would seem that this has been the base of his diet thus far as he is not particularly excited about the home cooked diet that my dogs are accustomed to. He enjoys his treats but does not seem particularly food motivated. He will come around to see what we are having for dinner though and is quite interested in what might be on our plates.

Astro is difficult to walk on a leash at this point. He pulls and he sometimes swerves all over the place making it difficult to gain control over the walk. I think that he was often taken out to an open space and played with "off leash and perhaps did not have a lot of time on a leash. He will need continued work in this area to help him to learn better leash manners.

Astro is a smart, loveable, handsome pup deserving of a wonderful new family to call his own. There is some work to be done but with some patience, time and commitment from his new owner this dog will be a fabulous addition to any family.

A home with a confident new pack leader would be best for Astro. Although Astro was raised in an apartment Astro really needs space to expel some of his puppy energy. Other furry canine friends would be fine that are tolerant of his playful sometimes excessive energy as he really just wants to make friends. I think that someone that likes the idea of visiting the dog park would love this dog!

If you think Astro would be a good fit for your family pack, please submit an application for consideration.
