My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

GERTIE is a 18 month old yellow spayed female Lab who weighs 44 pounds. She's a very sweet girl who took great care of her puppies. She likes to go in the yard and be with other dogs and visitors. Everything is new to Gertie as she spent most of her life in a pen in her owner’s back yard but she is learning to take new things in her stride no matter how scary. She is approved for kids aged 14+.

Gertie's Story: There is a small rescue that heard about Gertie and her pups being kept in a pen in a yard. When they went there she was in the pen without food or water and little shelter. They called Animal Control who came and when he saw her condition he contacted the owner and persuaded him to give them up to the rescue. She is now in Lab Rescue of LRCPs care

Update (2/11) Took her for her a walk with our other pups this morning her only complaint was I didn't let her off lead and it wasn't long enough. She told me she hopes her new family will come visit her this coming weekend to take her home.

Update (1/10): Gertie continues to make progress and has started using the dog door into the back yard which may not sound like much but for her it’s a big step as for the last couple of weeks she has watch our dogs go in and out but every time she tried the flap would hit her and she would run back to her bed. To hide. After going through it a couple of time she is comfortable to use it all the time. She will now come into the kitchen on her own but that is about as far as she goes.

Update (12/30): Gertie now goes everyplace in the house and is sleeping in our bedroom with Bailey. She loves to go out in the morning with our pups and chase the deer out of the yard and into the woods. Her recall isn’t the greatest but we are working on that.

Update (12/19): Gertie is now being fostered by the Weaver’s Roxanne is going out of town so Gertie came to stay with us. She is very sweet and loves attention. If your petting one dog you soon have two to pet and tell how sweet they are. She is still nervous around new things and since she just came here everything is new to her. Once she figures something out she is good with it and it doesn’t bother her again. She goes on walks with me and Mia which pass over a stream but she and Mia take the long way, down the banks, into the water , swim across the steam, up the bank to join me on my walk. On the way back the same scenario is reversed. She is now getting brave enough to come out of the family room and almost into the kitchen.

Update (11/29):. Gertie is a love who enjoys being with you and getting attention which she rewards with a wagging tail and kisses. She goes on walks off lead through a wooded trail with the neighborhood dogs which includes running through the wood, splashing through mud puddles and going swimming in the ponds. She is a little timid when she first does something new but after she figures out that it isn't going to hurt her she is fine. If she encounters something new she comes back to Roxanne to get reassurance then she is off again. She would do better with another dog to teach her the ropes and give her company. She does nicely with Cheyenne's who is an Alpha female. She doesn't get into trouble when she is left alone and has free run of the house, no counter surfing or garbage can exploring.
