The month of October is Pit Bull Awareness Month! Unfortunately the media and public have stereotyped and judged an entire group of dogs, as well as their owners, based on the actions of a few.
I am lucky enough to be around these wonderful dogs daily and I have yet to see anything that leads me to believe the hype. Meeting our girl Happy a couple weeks ago, proves exactly what these dogs are about.
She was found tied up to a cement pole in downtown Stockton. She was clearly very ill, could barely walk, her front teeth and her canines had been filed down, she was completely emaciated, bite marks all along her hind quarters, a torn bloody ear, infested with hundreds of fleas, a bloody scabbed up nose, discharge from her eyes, and unbeknownst to us, several mummified puppies inside her. It was clear that this girl had not only been mistreated, but she had been severely neglected...probably one of the worse cases I have seen in a long time. This dog had clearly been through the ringer, and although she was dying slowly....her spirit was not. She quickly showed us the meaning of gratitude, unconditional love and although we had tears streaming down our faces not being able to fathom how a human was responsible for inflicting such pain on her...she had a wiggle in her butt like no tomorrow. If any dog, had a valid reason not to trust humans and be aggressive, it would be her....but its just not the case...Happy is just that...Happy. Happy to love again, and Happy to be loved. I will say this...I have never in my life met a more loving affectionate breed of dog, that consistently shows its ability to connect with your soul on a whole other level.
