My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Star is a young girl who is friendly with everyone. She is a scared little girl but quickly learning that she now has nothing to fear and is a loving environment. There are three children in her foster home and the highlight of her day is when they return from school. She sits and waits for them. Star is approximately 1 - 1 1/2 years old. She is coming along very well and will make a wonderful family companion.

Here is what her foster family had to say:

Star is such a gentle soul that is slowing learning to trust people and enjoy the hugs and affection she has missed out on and needs. She deserves a patient, quiet, comforting home that will treat her with lots of love and attention and make her part of their family for years to come. With oodles of kindness she’ll one day know nothing but love. She is truly a “shining star” that is improving every day.

Star is friendly with all people but still has some hesitation when meeting new people. She will cower a little when they reach out to pet her. With her own family however, and with anyone she knows is safe, she is all love and kisses. We have three children (12, 10 and 3 year old) that she is wonderful with. She’s very excited when my older two arrive home from school as she’ll often head to the living room and wait for them to sit and visit with her. She does avoid my 3 year old as his energy level tends to make her nervous. She is unsure of what to do when he’s running around and will sometimes leave the room to go to a quieter place.

She is also a little shy when meeting new dogs but again, once she sees that they are not going to hurt her she is fine. Star has been great with my two cats and is sometimes a little shy around one of them. She does like to play with the one cat who sometimes thinks he’s a dog himself. We have two foster kittens that she does get excited with so it may be best for her to be in a home with older cats or those that are past the kitten stage. It would be nice for Star to have another canine companion that is calm and quiet like her. I’m sure she would enjoy the company.

Star does whine for a bit when we first leave the home. Having some chew toys (teddy bears) for her will help keep her occupied. I believe Star would be best in a quiet home where there is good routine and people around her often. She does enjoy your company and will follow you throughout the house. Now that she is more comfortable in our home she doesn’t feel the need to peep and tip toe around the corner 3 or 4 times before realizing that everything is okay. She is very easily scared of loud noises, traffic, etc. but with lots of reassurance she is becoming more confident every day.

Star loves to go for walks and run around in the backyard sniffing the bunny tracks. She will play tug with you when she sees a blanket dangling. We try playing fetch with her but she is still not sure what it is that she needs to do with the ball. She is becoming more comfortable with affection, holding and petting and is learning to trust and be a happy puppy.

Star will take food from you gently and will sit for you as well but she does need more training on teaching her to not reach up at the counter/table. She is learning to sit near you and wait patiently. She will respond to come in when called when outside in the yard but off leash may be challenging as her nose likes to take her on a journey. She needs to be kept on a leash. She would benefit from recall training as I believe most beagles would. When I have asked Star to come or stop while on leash she will stop. Again, she needs reassurance that she is doing a great job and that no one is going to hurt her.

Star has been fully house trained but needs encouragement to know when to go to the door to go outside. We will often let her out without her requesting to get out after a long nights sleep and periodically throughout the day. She is let out at lunch time every day as well and taken for a short walk. She doesn’t look to go outside but hasn’t had any accidents in the house. Star will avoid going into the crate so I did not force it on her. She has been so shy and timid that I did not want to cause her more stress. Star is leash trained and will sit quietly for you to put the leash on and to take it off. She will need more direction on keeping to one side when walking as she tends to cross back and forth and pull a little when her nose picks up a scent. She is less frightened now as we’ve been praising her when she does stop and listen.

Star would be best placed in a home that is quiet and calm and that has a back yard as she loves to smell the scents in the air and on the ground and rub her belly on the grass. She is wonderful with children but it would be best for her to be with children that are past the toddler stage as she is nervous, timid and afraid of loud noises. Sudden fast movements frighten her. She loves to be with you and will tip toe throughout the house and peek around corners. She is a true sweetheart with lots of love to give. She’ll sleep by your bed as quiet as a mouse and wag her tail for you as soon as she sees you in the morning while she is still in her bed. She deserves nothing by positive re-enforcement and love and a calm household.

If you think this sweet girl would fit into your home and your heart, please submit an application for consideration.
