My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Coal: 9-yr-old male black lab -- 95-lbs

Coal’s current owners do too much traveling to adequately provide for his needs, so his owners have reluctantly decided to give him up to a new forever home.

His owner says: Coal is mostly submissive. Loves to be the leader, but will give up his post when another dog gets angry. Turns stuffed toys inside out surgically. Loves petting forever and laying his head on me when I let him. Used to ride the neighborhood kids on his back when they were younger. Has a loud bark. Loves to ride in the truck. He sits, and comes when he is called or signaled.”

Coal has been provided some good exercise, per the former owner: “twice a week to the municipal dog park and once a week to a county pond for a swim as Coal loves to swim. Other days, just around the block -- that is enough for him, as his knees get tired if I exercise him too much.” He will wrestle with you, and he rolls onto his back and fends you off with his paws. Regarding small children, reportedly, Coal “will check to make sure they will let him lick their face.”

According to his owner, Coal “loves other dogs. Many dogs sense his submissiveness and try to hump him. He thinks they are petting him, somehow, and just moves away when they don't stop. He chases cats until he realizes they will always out-run him. Then he just sniffs around to remember their scent, and then he comes back to show what a good protector he is and that he wants a hug.”

Coal obeys the following commands: sit, stay, take it, drop, come, off, and “help get the toy”. He is current on all shots, micro-chipped, and negative for heartworms. He has had some knee surgeries years ago… and that slows him down a little. He is also not fond of any vacuum cleaner or some power tool sounds.

Coal has lived with Catie for the past 7-1/2 years, but does not need to be adopted out with Catie. It would be nice but not a must.

Coal is being fostered in San Jose.

If you are interested in Coal, call Rescue Rep Dave 415-686-4248.

(Please keep in mind we are all volunteers, most of us work full time and we all have personal lives. I do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient and I will be back in touch with you. When the dogs are in foster homes then it may take longer as we need to touch base with the fosters for updates on the dogs. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week and we do not have a facility that we keep the dogs housed in. They are scattered all over the Bay Area.)
