My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Jack is a smart, loyal and curious boy who's playful and can melt the heart of everyone he meets with his warm amber eyes and a sideways tilt of his head. With a little work Jack will be an excellent dog who can adapt into nearly any situation. Jack looks happy and healthy - his coat having really come along since we got him with a nice bath and some love. Jack is just under a year old and currently weighs just over 50 lbs.

Here is what else Jack's foster family had to say:

Jack is great with people and dogs of all sizes! He hasn't growled or snapped at anyone even when he was at his most stressed the first day, and he knows not to jump up on kids even when they're running and playing. Jack can be shy with adult people at first, but once he gets to know you he'll approach you easily, tail wagging. Jack even gets along with dog-savvy cats!

Jack prefers to be with people but can be crated easily and without concern when we leave. He doesn't attempt to get out, and Jack has never had an accident in the house or the crate. He has some fear around skateboards and bicycles. We think this is just because he's unsure about what they are and what the noise is. He loves to settle down beside his people with a chew, run after a ball or play tug but most of all Jack loves to run and play with other dogs! Jack has been very quiet in the home, but has let out a couple endearing bays during some good play sessions outside the house.

Jack is a hound, so while he hasn't really gotten in to any trouble [he's been supervised with corrections] he's very curious about smells - all of them - and will follow his nose around the house. This means he's been good at locating food sitting on counters - even out of his reach - and he's tall enough he could easily grab something off a counter if he was really tempted. Teaching him some manners around this would be essential. Jack also has a taste and curiosity about people food, so we've been working on getting him not to beg and give us space. Jack came to us without knowing any commands, so we're working on "sit", "back" and "off" right now which he's making pretty good progress with.

Jack is fully house trained and has never had an accident in the house, or his crate! He is crate trained and can easily be crated and left without much fuss. Right now we crate him overnight and when we're all leaving the house. We usually give him a good treat or a kong, so he takes to it well. Jack can be walked - and is very happy to go on hikes - but he is a hound so he also loves to explore with his nose. While Jack is already not pulling as much as he did the first day, his new family would probably want to work on getting him to heel and not pull some more. Jack is a little hesitant to get in cars at first but we just give him a little time and he soon jumps right in and settles for the ride.

Jack is a moderate energy dog. He's been getting at least one good romp each day in conjunction with a shorter walk in the evening and has been happy to settle in at home otherwise. He doesn't shed much - we haven't really noticed an increase in fur around the house or on ourselves!

While Jack would probably do well in any situation where his family could give him time and exercise, Jack would do really excellent in a family situation where there's another dog that loves to play and can show him the ropes, since Jack seems to learn better from other dogs. Whoever they are, his new family should be committed to teaching him the basics and beyond since Jack is a big strong boy!
