My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This awesome guy is Huck. Huck is 9 weeks old and is a Border Collie, German Shepherd cross.

Huck was found roaming around in a ditch at 6 weeks old and was believed to have wandered away from his mom. He was quickly picked up by our rescue and we were lucky enough to have him brought to our house to be fostered.

All Pound Dog Rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested, de-wormed (if required), and microchipped prior to adoption. The adoption donation of $400 is applied to assist in the costs of veterinary care and the overall care of the dog. For more information and adoption applications please consult our website at www.pounddog.ca.
When we first met Huck it was quite clear that he was a very happy and friendly puppy. He immediately fell in love with our 7 year old retriever and they have become very good play mates.

Huck has been lucky enough to share a foster home with 2 other dogs. He has great fun chasing them through the yard, trying to keep up with the older dogs can be a big challenge for such a little guy. He has great energy and will play outside with us for quite a bit before needing a rest. He does not like to miss out on any action. His day really consists of playing together in the yard, rolling in the grass; toys at his disposal and all yummy treats to top it all off. With the snow this week, he was quite hesitant to go outside. He turned his head to the other dogs as to ask if it was ok…and “what is all that white stuff?” As soon as the others were out, he was right there with them, following their lead. He didn’t stay out too long though.

Huck is learning new tricks everyday. He has mastered sit and down, with little hesitation. He is really good at coming when called by name. Learning that skill is very important to keep up with and practice everyday. He is a really smart boy and in time and with some good obedience training, he will be a very confident companion.

At meal time Huck very excited to get his food, but once he gets it he will nibble away at it. He likes to graze and then go see what the others got, just in case it may be better and then he has, and will sneak a bit or two of theirs. When we give him treats he is very good about sitting and waiting for it. He will gently take the treat from you and then go and eat it somewhere and then quickly come back for more, just In case there is more to come. He doesn’t want to miss out.

Huck can by a shy at times, so it is important to keep up with his socialization. Having another dog in the house would be very helpful to Huck. We are looking for a home with another good natured dog for him to live with as Huck really does love the attention and comfort of another dog.

Huck is doing quite well with his bathroom training. He is now going to the door to be let out. Don’t stray too far from him though, ‘cause when he goes to the door he has to go out right away, and if you miss the opportunity, then you may have a little mess to clean up inside. Watching him at all times is very important while training.

If you enjoy go for walks, Huck is going to be a great addition to your family. As soon as that leash is in your hand, he knows. He is super excited to go and sniff everything he can. Even though he is a puppy he is pretty good at staying at your side while walking and not getting too far ahead, he likes to walk along side of the 2 dogs we have when we all go together, truly helps with his training also.

We have exposed Huck to children of all ages, and he seems relaxed and playful. A home for Huck with children and other dogs would be excellent for him. He is extremely gentle and loves cuddling. And in the evening when everyone is settling down he will cuddle up next to you on the couch by your side, or on the floor by your feet.

Like most puppies they tend to have a few habits that are quite comical. Huck, like other foster pups we have had, likes to steal slippers. However, where he differs is that he will actually chew them. There has been no damage as his is watched very closely, but if he isn’t watched, this could get out of hand very quickly. Sometimes he just brings the shoes into the living room for fun, because the other dogs are sleeping. Our retriever and he have developed quite the mother/son relationship, where she will stand with a chew toy in her mouth while he lays in front of her and chews it. He will also snuggle up to her for naps in the afternoon, and Ruby is quite willing to let him roll on her back and tug at her tail. She does let him know when enough is enough though.

A hilarious habit that Huck has is he is a shoe collector. He will bring all the shoes in the house to her bed. He doesn’t actually chew them but gathers them. I don’t think he likes them at the front door. And after he is satisfied that he has enough shoes, our socks aren’t out of the question to join the pile either. Once you put them all back where they belong, he starts all over again. And visitors aren’t exempt from this routine.

He is extremely gentle and loves cuddling. And in the evening when everyone is settling down he will cuddle up next to you on the couch by your side, or on the floor by your feet. At bedtime, Huck sleeps in his crate. He is very good at going in the crate all on his own, he actually quite enjoys his crate even throughout the day. He will wander over and curl up inside for a little power nap. He really likes the comfort of his own space. Huck always gets a good night’s sleep and generally awakens around 6:30-7. He is soooo happy to see you in the morning with his wiggly bum and tail going at full speed.

Being such a young puppy a few things to remember. He will definitely be in need of family who has the ability to come home at noon and let him out to go to the bathroom and stretch his legs for a little bit. He is too young to stay crated all day. It is also necessary that his new family continue with the Obedience classes for Huck as building a strong foundation is key. Huck is currently attending puppy socialization classes and he will need to keep this up but also attend obedience skills classes when he gets a bit older. He is a mix of 2 very smart breeds so we want a family for him that will take advantage of that and train him to his top potential.

If Huck seems like he would be a great fit for your family and you have the time, patience and energy to train a puppy, he is waiting for you!
