My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Cai is a handsome purebred Border Collie. He is such a great boy and it would be harder to find a more perfect dog! Cai came to rescue fully housetrained and knowing all the basic commands (Stay, Sit, Lay down, and Come). He's okay on leash, but could use a little work to not pull quite so much. Cai has very good manners, and corrects easily with a simple "no" when he's doing something he isn't supposed to.

Cai has TONS of toy drive. He loves tennis balls, rope toys, frisbees, you name it! He loves to play tug, with people and other dogs. Cai also likes to chase tennis balls and frisbees but is still working on bringing them back. He knows the command "drop it", but usually does so a few feet away. He needs to lose 5 or 6 pounds, but when he does Cai will be a very athletic boy! Cai definitely needs a fenced in yard. He could probably jump a 4 ft. fence easily but he seems to respect boundaries okay so far. He shouldn't ever be left outside unsupervised, though, because he does look for weakness in the fence when he gets bored and came to a shelter as a stray-so he's probably a pro at escaping when he wants to!!

We haven't had him tested with cats yet, but Cai does GREAT with other dogs. He spends his days at a dog daycare where he is with lots of other dogs all day long! Cai will play some, but is mostly interested in playing tug or very respectfully herding the other dogs. He isn't too abrasive about it and has gotten along with every dog he's met so far. Cai has been great with all the people he has met, too, including small kids. He loves to cuddle and get pets, but is easily distracted by toys or other dogs.

Cai does seem to have a fair amount of herding instinct. He also has some "quirks" that are probably associated with typical Border Collie OCD. The most prominent of these is that he likes to chase and pounce on shadows. Cai's shadow chasing is not destructive and he is easily corrected and distracted. This may go away as he gets the proper exercise he has probably been deprived of in his previous home, since he seems to only be interested in shadows when he gets bored.

Overall, Cai is just a lovely boy that is such a joy to be around and has, so far, been very easy! He won't need much training, if any, and has enough energy to keep his person busy with a nice off switch for in the house. He would make a great addition to an active family, whether or not they have previous experience with Border Collies!
