My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

LOTUS is a 7 year old neutered black male Lab who weighs 93 pounds. Lotus is a very sweet guy. Gracie & Lotus were dropped off at the shelter for financial reasons. Lotus is an AKC registered, purebred lab who is never far from his pal, Gracie.. Lotus is a big jovial guy, calm and happy. He pulls a little on the leash and is willing to try anything. They both ride well in the car and get along with other dogs. Owner said they sleep on their dog beds and love their squeaky toys. Both pups reportedly said that coming to Lab Rescue is the best seasonal treat they could have received! He is approved for kids 10+

Update (2/27): This special couple has it all....looks, smarts, soft and shiny fur, the ability to supercuddle, and wicked lab leans. Any home would be a much better place if they were in it!!!

Update (2/19): Both are doing really well. Lotus is making progress on his leash skills and outdoor manners. He is so smart and handsome! Neither are really into the snow, they did not seem to notice. Gracie is an angel, gets super excited for her walks, it's like she is going to explode! They both sit to get their leashes on, but Gracie's butt just can't stop wiggling with anticipation. It is adorable! They both know commands: sit, stay, give (they give their paw), and down. They are so much fun.

Update (02/03): The dogs love their walks, especially Gracie. They sit to get their leashes on and Gracie can barely contain herself, it is like she is about to explode with joy. On their walks they sit at each corner, waiting to cross. Gracie does well and know the commands "Watch" if she is about to run into something, "Step" to step up or down curbs, "Easy" to slow down. When other dogs or people approach I let them know she is blind. Once she smells the human's hand she calms down, same with dogs. I try to not overwhelm her with new people and dogs, 1 or 2 new friends per walk is good. Lotus is very interested and curious about his surroundings. He gets excited when he sees other dogs. We are working on keeping him calm and he is making great strides and learning to politely approach new friends. He is great with humans. Both are very accepting when they meet new people. When their dog walker came to meet them they warmed right up to him a few minutes after their initial meeting. Lotus would absolutely love and benefit from a fenced yard to run around in and explore!

Update (1/30): They ride beautifully in the car (and love going out and about), are house trained and fine left on their own. They both sleep through the night on the couch or their dog beds (mostly just the couch, which they LOVE). In the morning they greet you with such enthusiasm. Gracie wiggles so hard her back legs come off the floor! Lotus, though a bit more subdued, gets in on the act. Both have awesome lab leans and are ridiculously affectionate. They think they are lap dogs and love to cuddle on the couch. It has been great for keeping their foster parents warm on these cold evenings! There is no such thing as too much love or cuddles for these two! In the house they are perfectly mannered: no counter surfing or begging (they show interest, but just say No and they leave it alone), are quiet unless someone comes to the door, then Lotus barks and Gracie follows his lead. They quietly chew their antlers on their beds and know better than to bring them on the couch. Both are so smart and easy to train. They know "sit", "stay" and Lotus will present his paw if you say "give".

Update (1/28): Gracie and Lotus are two of the sweetest, funniest, most affectionate dogs I have ever had the pleasure to know. Their foster dad and I are completely, utterly, smitten! It is hard to do anything but love them; a lot of chores around the house are getting neglected because we cannot stop petting and hanging out with them.
They have settled beautifully into their foster home. It was amazing to watch Gracie map out the house. Within a couple of days she had the layout down pat. You would never know she was blind. She goes up and down our front and back 3 steps just fine, though she would do best in a house without stairs. We block off the stairs to the second floor and neither have shown any interest in going up. Giving Gracie her insulin is a breeze, she does not even react to the shot.
I cannot say enough good things about these amazing and sweet babies. They have brought so much happiness to our house. Their forever family will be so much more complete and happy with these two amazing animals as part of their family.

Update (01/23): Gracie and Lotus are awesome. So smart, affectionate, loving, and fun! They have settled in beautifully, like they have always been a part of our home

Update (01/15): We thought Lotus and Gracie were not bonded so they were separated for a few days. Lotus became depressed and Gracie was very upset. They had a heartwarming reunion and we will keep them together. Lotus is a "velcro lab". He wants to be wherever you are and will whine when he can't get to you or if you're preparing to leave. He might even howl when you leave to really lay on the guilt! However, he seems to settle in once you're gone. He hasn't shown any destructive tendencies, but we recommend that he be crated (when you leave for the day) in his new home until he's settled in. Lotus is active and athletic and definitely needs a fenced yard. He likes being outside and spends most of his time patrolling the yard. He loves walks, likes to retrieve, and likes to jump into the air to catch things (like stuffed toys). Talented boy! He seems to have a high prey drive: he shakes his stuffed toys, chases squirrels, and was a bit too interested in the cats he met at the veterinary clinic. NO CATS! Lotus is not overly affectionate, but he does love to lay next to you and enjoys the occasional belly rub. I also think he will become more affectionate with time. Lotus listens well overall, and when he does decide to be a tiny bit stubborn, he will listen if you're stern with him. He is quiet in the house, but will bark at people or dogs who pass by if he's in the yard. Overall, this boy is just a big lug with a tough exterior and a soft heart underneath. :-)

Update (12/26): After much review, Lab Rescue has determined that Lotus and Gracie DO NOT need to be placed together and will likely do better if adopted out separately.
LOTUS should go to a home as an only dog or with a submissive dog. He definitely needs to be the boss. He takes toys and will push other dogs out of the way. He does try to engage in physical play with dogs once he knows them, he just needs the right type of dog buddies.
