An update from Fia's human foster sister: My name is Madison and my mom and I are fostering Fia. I've spent a lot of time with her and have taken many pictures that I wanted to share with you. Fia (whom I call "Fifa" - like the soccer group) is the sweetest and cutest puppy ever. She is playful, but quiet when she needs to be. I taught her how to sit by commanding her with my pointer finger held up in the air and saying "sit." She will still need to work on that, but she is a quick learner. We have a Golden that she loves to play with. I hope her new family will enjoy Fia as much as we do!"
Fia's foster mom tells us that Fia just loves to cuddle and is the ultimate snuggler. She is nearly fully house-broken and will go to the door and give a little whine when she wants to go out to "potty." Fia gets along with the family's 2 dogs but especially follows their female Golden around as though she her is her mommy - just so endearing! Whoever adopts this little pup is getting a true gem of a dog!!!
Fia's Story: Fia is a sweet Retriever mix who is about 14 weeks old. A family brought Fia to the shelter, saying they found her as a stray. However, when an owner turns in a dog at this shelter, there is no “stray hold” and the shelter can put the dog to sleep immediately. We believe she may have been un-adopted from a little of pups from their own family dog. Amazing, since this little pup is a doll and a half with her shiny solid black coat.
Fia is living with a foster family who will give her a ton of TLC now. She enjoys her humans, which includes a teenage human sister. This pup gets along well with her canine foster sibling and is okay with the cat too. Fia will be spayed and will have all of her puppy vaccinations before coming north in early December. In Italian “fia” means a flickering fire, and this girl is sure to light up anyone’s life!

Black "Goldens...?"
Since the early 2000’s, animal rescue workers have noticed an increasing phenomena called, “Black Dog Syndrome,” which is that black dogs tend to be adopted more slowly than dogs of other coloring. As a result, there are more black dogs in shelters, and black dogs have a higher euthanization rate – purely because of the color of their coat! In a recent survey done by the adoption website “Petfinder,” Petfinder member shelters and rescue groups reported that most pets are listed for 12.5 weeks on Petfinder, whereas, less-adoptable pets (such as black, senior, and special needs pets) spend almost four times as long on Petfinder.
You may ask, "what does this have to do with a Golden Retriever rescue?" SGRR often goes a step further than basic rescue, by taking in dogs that might be thought of as “less adoptable” because of their physical condition. We have expanded that to include these special black dogs, many often thought to be Golden mixes. Since doing so, we have seen an overwhelming interest in these “black goldens,” and note we begin getting inquiries about them the minute we publish their pictures on our site! Like all of our dogs, these pups are just looking for a family that can see beyond their coloring to their true “golden heartedness,” and to love them and make them their own! Those who can, will be glad they did!

About Our Rescue
Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.
The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

**Please note: The fees listed represent a slight increase and are effective for applications received after June 1 2014. We regret the need to increase the fees for our dogs, but found it necessary due to the increased costs we are faced with for each dog's care and placement.
A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.
Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.
