My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Finnick and Effie, along with five other dogs, were abandoned by their owner in a neighborhood off Chelsea in North Memphis during the first freezing weather of this winter (low 20’s). Finnick and Karma were on very short chains, with no shelter, food or water. We think Effie and Finnick are the parents of Karma, Roxy and the two tiny starved pups. All the dogs except one were severely malnourished—you could count every bone in their bodies.

Thank goodness for our volunteer who got the request to help these poor dogs and responded. It was pouring rain the day she went to check on them. All were wet, cold, starving and despite the rain, had no access to fresh water.

Despite their situation, Effie and Finnick are happy, sweet, loving companion dogs. Clearly, before they fell on hard times, someone loved them. Roxy, Karma, the two wee babies, Effie and Finnick just seem very grateful to be warm, safe, dry, and well fed.

Surprisingly, Effie and Finnick show no food aggression or any other anxiety issues. This is a testament to their sound temperaments. In their foster home, they learned to sit for a treat in three tries – evidence of their intellect and willingness to please. Effie and Finnick come readily when called, happy to greet their foster mom. Finnick gives the gentlest kisses to your hands. Effie just leans in for all she is worth. Don’t you just love a dog that leans in?

Finnick and Effie are medium dogs who now weigh about 45lbs. About 20 inches at the shoulder, they are leggy with smooth coats. They are up to date on their shots, spayed/neutered, and heartworm negative and on preventives.

Finnick and Effie get along with all the dogs in their foster home—from tiny to large. They love their foster mom. While there are no kids in the foster home, Momma Julie is certain Effie and Finnick are kid friendly. Both walk well on lead.

If you desire a medium size dog who is low-shedding and simply grateful to be at your side, Effie or Finnick would be an ideal choice. They would spend the rest of their lives letting you know how thankful they are for your love. The adoption fee for each dog is $150.

The ideal home for this Real Good Dog will have a secure fenced yard. A solid history of excellent vet care for current or previous pets is required. Preference will be given to applicants who have specific breed experience.

Please visit www.realgoodrescue.com to submit an electronic application if you are interested in adopting this or any other Real Good Dog.

We adopt dogs from Memphis Animal Shelter when we can. The shelter has an 83% euthanasia rate, one of the highest in the country. Unfortunately, any dog coming from Memphis Animal Shelter, and most other shelters for that matter, will have been in contact with contagious illness. Even though the dogs have been in foster care and appear to be in good health, they may become stressed when changing environments and exhibit signs and symptoms of illness. If you have other pets, they need to be up to date on vaccines before bringing a shelter dog into your home. We will take the adopted animal back, but we are not responsible for your other animal's vet care. We always disclose where the dogs have come from. Please ask for any information about the dogs and exercise due caution if you have immunocompromised animals.
