My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Huey: ~3-yr-old neutered male chocolate lab mix 60 lbs

Not sure how I got there… Was I dropped off by my previous owners? Did I escape from a backyard? Am I an undercover dog for the CIA? Did I botch my last assignment? My memory is blank. I don’t even remember my name. And this is how the rest of my life began…

This mysterious woman spotted me wandering the streets of Oakland that day. She seemed like a nice human. And then her accomplice showed up with a leash… and I was hoodwinked and taken to a safe house in Oakland. Then the games began. They fed me. I said nothing. They gave me a comfortable place to sleep. I told them nothing. They introduced me to an older Dachshund; was she there to gain my trust and make me talk? I was worried; what did they all want from me? They walked me around the neighborhood trying to trigger my memories – either that or they just wanted me to pee. A trip to the nearby SPCA resulted in some doc poking and prodding me. I even think he shot me up with some truth serum. And still I told them nothing – heck, I didn’t know anything. I overheard my human male captor calling the Feds over at City of Oakland Animal Shelter who told Drew to post my photos around the neighborhood and wait the mandatory two weeks to see if the Russians came forward demanding my release. Nothing. Latest I am being told is that I’m being released to a half-way house lab rescue organization to be connected with Forever Family – whoever they are. The adventure continues…

What Huey’s Rescue Rep says: Huey has rebounded nicely from whatever trauma preceded his rescue from the streets of Oakland by the two good Samaritans. They’ve cared for him for the past three weeks and he has responded with affection and confidence. They describe him as “silly, goofy, easy going, good listener, easy to train, and smart.” They named him Huey. And, yes, he has been living with an older Dachshund and the two get along just great. They’ve taken him out on trails and had many positive encounters with other dogs. Huey also enjoys the company of some neighborhood kids. Huey walks pretty good on a Gentle Leader, but is still learning how to walk on a leash. He remains skittish of unfamiliar people, especially men. He also is frightened by loud, sudden noises. He just need a quick reassurance that everything's okay and calms down. He has not shown any evidence of fear biting or aggression. His new caretaker will need to continue to correct his mounting behavior that has been occurring when Huey gets excited. Huey is healthy and current on shots. Huey’s continued progress makes him a great candidate for a prospective future in a home with children and other dogs. Huey will soon be going to a foster in Livermore… If you are interested in Huey, call Rescue Rep Dave 415-686-4248.

(Please keep in mind we are all volunteers, most of us work full time and we all have personal lives. I do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient and I will be back in touch with you. When the dogs are in foster homes then it may take longer as we need to touch base with the fosters for updates on the dogs. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week and we do not have a facility that we keep the dogs housed in. They are scattered all over the Bay Area.)
