My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

LAYLA is a 3 year old spayed red fox female Lab who weighs 40 pounds. She is a sweet pup who is lovable and affectionate and gets along great with other dogs. She listens when called and loves the water, is house broken and crate trained. She would be a great running partner or fun to teach tricks to as she is very agile and loves to run. She was in a rural shelter for two years so is now getting used to the noises and activity in a home. She is a petite lab who will make someone a great companion. Layla is approved for kids aged 10+

Update (12/02): Layla is still nervous around new people and new things at first (and may always be). Time and patience will be key for her adopters. New dogs are awesome and take no time at all to warm up to - she would love to be a foster sibling since that just means constant new playmates. Her new human family is going to need to be patient with her as she comes around to accept them - love at first sight is simply not her thing. Trust must be earned. It will require lots of moving slowly, allowing her to come to you, and unending patience...but your reward will be an amazing, loyal, sweet and loving dog.

Update (11/02): Layla is very much improved. she is sweet and loveable. she is well socialized with dogs and has lots of friends at the river. She will need a family that is patient and disciplined. When we first got Layla, she was extremely anxious with all noises and everything was new. I would have characterized her as being noise sensitive. Almost everything frightened her. After a couple of months, she had settled in considerably. After 4 months she remains cautious with anyone new. She has warmed up to several of our friends that have gotten to know her and we know this is the best plan for her adoption. She will be a great companion. she loves to run off and on leash, she comes when called, she is small enough to go hiking and also take camping. she is quite the snuggle bug and loves to cuddle. She is housetrained and well behaved. She does not like to be approached by strangers and that will require management, hence the disciplined family. She is less anxious with women but seems to listen to the men better, both Bill and the trainer find her to be extremely well behaved. She loves me but she listens better to Bill. I think if we all understand what her concerns are, we can find her a home. She really is the best dog 95% of the time, the other 5% is still leery of people and we just need to help her continue improvement. She has come a very long way and we continue to see her making progress weekly.

Update (7/22): Layla is still progressing and having great fun! She is doing great with new people and situations and really coming into her own and becoming brave. She is great in the house and does not need to be crated. She gets along well with all the resident dogs and has learned to love swimming too! She meets lots of new dogs and people daily at the river. She is a great petite size and just and awesome little gal! She LOVES toys and balls!!

Update (7/14): Layla really is making great progress. She's an absolute joy to come home to as she gets so excited to see me. The chemistry with our pack improves everyday and is quite good now. She is getting socialized at the river and plays well with other dogs. In fact, she instigates play quite often. She met Emmet today. I missed a video opportunity as the two of them were running and chasing each other. She's very affectionate.

Update (7/12): Layla is now starting to come into her own and is quite funny. This morning she had lots of fun swimming and playing with other dogs at the river. She has also developed a new morning routine. After she eats she comes bounding upstairs and jumps into the bed to give me morning kisses. She is a very sweet and seems to have adjusted about as well as any fosters we have had. She was easily housetrained and will sleep through the night from about 7:00 pm until 6:00 am. She enjoys her fun but is quite lazy at home after it is all done. I picked up some "babies" today and she does enjoy carrying them around. She shows no interest in our things. Yesterday she had quite the fun with just an empty milk jug.

Update (7/10): Layla has settled in even more. yesterday we had some storms and she was on the bed with me vs in the closet. She doesn’t seem bothered by our everyday noises anymore. It may just have been the unfamiliar at first. She continues to meld with our other dogs and gets along with them all very well. she is respectful of the pack hierarchy and is very submissive in her interactions. Layla enjoys her toys but does not bother our things. She will carry a shoe around now and again, but is not destructive. She loves to ride in the car and go for her walks. She is fun loving and has a reasonable level of energy. Once she gets her regular exercise, she is relaxed and lazy.

Layla has been with us about 1 week and we already see huge progress. We reassure her when there are unfamiliar or loud noises. She does not like the vacuum cleaner so we put her in another room. Otherwise, her reactions to noises (blender, garbage disposal, trash man) have lessened daily. She is very well socialized with dogs and people in the outdoors. She has to be introduced to people in smaller areas. We have had people in the house and she was a tad scared but fine after proper introduction. She gets along well with our dogs and dogs she meets at the park. Her behaviors are very lab-like in carrying things around, exploring, curiosity, loves to play, and swimming at the river. There is no food or toy aggression. She is not destructive. We found crating to cause her to be more anxious but we also have other dogs which helped her relax in the new surroundings. We recommend a more quiet home where she can adjust to the new environment and there is respect and reassurance for fears. We are surprised at how quickly she has adjusted. She was housetrained when we started fostering her and that has not changed. she quickly learned the routine and eventually the dog door. She walks well off and on leash. She will come when called and knows basic commands. Layla is eager to please and obeys the word "no". She is smaller, 40 lbs, and very affectionate. Her coat is a beautiful ginger color. She is the perfect companion for someone who wants a smaller lab and is able to give her some patience at first. We feel her noise sensitivity is short-lived and we have seen great strides even within a week.

Update (6/16): Layla went in for a once over at the vet with Toby and got a great report! Healthy, fun girl just needs her own family now!!
