My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Lou would like to introduce himself and let you know that he is looking for a loving home to be his forever! Lou is a 1 ½ yr old Basset Hound boy who is a total doll and so sweet and loving that we have no idea why his prior family turned him into a pound. Their loss is another family’s gain as Lou is a real gem and will make a wonderful companion to a special person or family.

Lou came to us with nails so overgrown it was apparent he wasn’t being walked or exercised properly. A big misconception with Basset Hounds is that they are lazy and don’t need a lot of exercise to be happy. This isn’t the case at all. Lou is not a “lie by the fireplace” type of Basset Hound. He is young and fit and relatively active so he requires good walks daily and play sessions in the yard to be happy. Once he has had his walk or play session he is happy to rest on his dog bed or chair and chew his toys. Lou LOVES walks and the more the merrier. Being a hound walks are all about sniffs for him so he loves covering new ground and getting all the smells he can. He walks at a good pace but does not lunge or overly pull. We find a flexi lead (extendable leash) works well with him on wooded trail walks or country or park walks as it lets him run from sniff to sniff while his person keeps on walking. But in town or out and about on the sidewalks he needs a regular 6-8ft leash to keep under better control. Lou has been known to chase after squirrels or bunnies so we wouldn’t want him running out onto the road in the city should a bunny run by. As with all hounds Lou MUST be leashed at all times when he is not otherwise confined. Hounds are all about smells and will wander off on the trail of a good smell if left off leash. Having said that, a securely fenced in yard is also necessity for Lou. It can’t have gaps or holes where he can escape and must be sturdy enough to confine him. Lou loves playing with sticks and toys in the yard so he would love time in the yard with his people to interact with and play. He does not like being left out in the yard alone for any length of time and wants to be with his family. If you are looking for a dog to spend a lot of time in the yard alone, Lou is not your guy. If you want a dog that will curl up at your feet or hang out in the room you are in, then he is the dog for you.

Lou is being fostered with other dogs and he is good with them but we do feel he would prefer to be the only dog in the home and get all the attention himself. Lou prefers to have well- mannered dog friends to socialize with rather than live in buddies. He can frighten when dogs approach in a swarming manner or too abruptly so he is not a dog suitable for the dog park. But out on walks or with friend’s dogs that he is properly introduced to that don’t bully him he is good and he does enjoy playing with other dogs once a relationship is formed. Lou is being fostered with cats as well and he is very good with them. He has never shown any aggression with the cats and at first mostly ignored them but now can be found playing with the younger ones from time to time. Lou is not being fostered with kids but we feel he would be ok for a home with kids over 8yrs old age. Lou sometimes gets excited in play and can jump up. Although a short dog, he is a heavy dog, about 55-60lbs, and he could inadvertently knock over younger children. He does not guard his food bowl or his toys though and he loves being petted and cuddled so he would be a good companion for older kids.

Lou’s favourite things in the world are walks, sticks, belly rubs and meal time. He is a gentle soul and will cuddle right up to you and give you little kisses from time to time. He is a quiet Basset and rarely barks. He is very easy to love and to live with. He is fully housetrained and has never messed in the house or destroyed anything. We don’t even have to crate Lou anymore as he is so well-mannered in the home. Lou sleeps on a dog bed next to our bed at night. You just need to put up with his moaning and groaning when he changes positions when he sleeps. He sounds like an old man!! During the day when we are gone or when we are hanging out in the family room he can be found resting on a dog bed or on a chair we have designated as his. He is calm and settled in the home, but up for any adventure outside. He is great in the car and wants to accompany his people on all trips and outings. He will gather all fallen sticks and branches in the yard and try and bring them inside. He is so cute to see walking around the yard with a stick in his mouth and he is grinning. He LOVES meal times and is fed twice a day. We noticed he got a bit itchy with the first brand of food we fed him. We switched him to a hypoallergenic diet and that has resolved. We will be trying him again on a different formulation of food to see if he can eat that but if he gets itchy again then he will have to stay on the hypoallergenic diet. This is readily available at vet clinics.

Lou has been a dream to foster and he is going to be a very hard dog for us to part with but we know he needs and deserves a family that will be committed to him for the rest of his life and provide him with all the love, exercise and companionship he needs. He will need to attend training classes with his new family so that he and his family can learn proper training techniques and skills. He has had a head start in his foster home so is ready to start classes with his new family right away. We are looking for a family for him that will keep up his training and put the effort in to make sure he continues to be well trained and well mannered. We also want a family for him that knows the Basset Hound breed well and wants a big dog in a short body and will make sure that he is exercised properly every day . Lou crashes after a good walk so it doesn’t take much to make him a content boy. He very much loves to be told he is a good boy and get pets and pats. He loves his people and tries to please. Lou will make a lucky family/person very happy. If you have the time to dedicate to a dog to walk him, train him and just hang out with him then Lou will be your very best friend for life!
