My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Sammy-Sue is small but mighty. She has such a big personality and self-confidence which is both admirable and adorable to be around with her sweet little face and short legs. She is a wonderful pup but will need a family with patience to help her finish house-training and learning commands. However, she's so great on a leash and gentle that my 4 year old can walk her and LOVES kids. She's a healthy girl who never misses a meal. She eats all her breakfast and dinner, and always welcomes treats. She is still recovering from a recent spay, so we use caution when touching her under belly but the incision is healing nicely. Sammy-Sue is a young girl approximately 10 months to a year old and currently weighs 20 lbs.

Here is what else her foster family had to say:

Sammy-Sue loves everyone. She'll greet you with a wagging tail and want to kiss you right away (whether human or canine). Aside from playful noises with our other dog, she hasn't exhibited any aggressive behaviour whatsoever. She's very patient and gentle. She's a very self-confident little girl. She greets everyone with enthusiasm and openness. Sammy-Sue has been great with our other dog (a Beagle-mix around her age). They play together all the time but know when it's time to settle. Upon coming into foster care she didn't pay much attention to our cats but has started to be a bit more interested in them since our dog tries to befriend them, despite their disinterest. Sammy watches, will get close but is never aggressive towards them - which could also be due to the fact they're almost the same size as her!

Sammy-Sue has been our best foster-girl for away times. As long as you give her some toys, a kong stuffed with a yummy thing to lick and blankets she's very content in her crate for the work day. I'm sure with a bit more training she could be left out of the crate with no issues. Given her confidence, she's a pretty fearless little girl. Sammy-Sue loves chewing on a good bone and a good belly rub (especially at night when she'll cuddle up beside you with her paws in the air, giving the best access to her belly). I don't think I've heard her bark more than twice and only because our dog was (outside, at a squirrel of course). She's very quiet, and we're working on getting her to whine or go to the door when she needs to go outside.

Being crated for the work day, she hasn't had the ability to chew anything she shouldn't. She will try her luck at food left nose-level but can't reach anything left counter-high - she will listen and "leave it" when told. Sammy-Sue is a great listener, and knows come and no. She needs a bit of guidance with other basics but is such a smart-girl she'll be able to learn these in no time. We've been working on them and she's starting to learn, and likes to watch our other dog for cues (knowing a piece of meat is soon to follow if she does the same). Sammy is on her way to being house trained and learning how to signal. She's very tell-tale though...if she's not within sight you know she's disappeared for a bathroom break - so if you catch her in time, she'll come when called to go outside. Sammy-Sue doesn't mind her crate at all, when left comfy with toys and blankets. We usually leave the radio on for them too. She goes in after a few times outside for the typical workday (8 hours max). Sammy-Sue is great on a leash. My 4 year old walks her, while she steals the heart of every passerby! She hasn't had an opportunity to bolt out the front door but one day we were raking leaves in the backyard, I turned to see where she was and after calling her had found she wiggled her way under the neighbour's extension (I knew she was small, but really...). She was great and came when called, no problem. Just being a curious pup. She does great and loves car rides. Long or short. She'll stand right between the driver and passenger seat (because she's so tiny she can) and be your side-dog driver looking out the front window with occasional kisses.

Sammy-Sue would do well with any family but as her foster Mom, I feel she would thrive and be happiest with a family who have children, enjoy activities and are happy to bring her along. Given her age, Sammy-Sue will need a family who can give her the patience and training she deserves to be the best new addition she can be to her forever family. I'm confident that whoever can give her this will be rewarded in so many other ways, with such a great little girl.

If you would like to make this sweet pup a part of your family, please submit an application for consideration.
