He rumbles deep in his chest and barks a stout warning. The flashlight plays across his face .... Boing! He hits the fence with purpose. That's Diesel after sundown. Scared, possessed of less than perfect eyesight, his age telling on him, he defends himself against an unknown intruder. Slowly, stiffly, he sits up on his bed. Stretching and shaking his head, the dog comes to his gate and sits casting for a sense of the visit. Hands he tried to bite last night, slip a collar past his waiting nose onto his neck. Happily he trots out of the kennels without a glance to another dog. Stopping to mark his passing, he eagerly goes to the idling truck. Tail wagging with purpose, he stands on his back legs waiting for a lift into the waiting crate. Gently, he turns around for his leash to be unsnapped. During the day, this routine will occur four times. Each time, Diesel accepts guidance with grace. Each time, he eagerly waits to see what's next. Each time, he reminds me that someone loved him once upon a time. That's Diesel after sun up. Engaged, willing, happy for the smallest kindness to visit him. Why would Houlagans' Rest take a dog like Diesel? He's older. A bit of a curmudgeon after dark. Not very spry. Eyesight like a human - virtually useless in his world. What's the pull? Diesel has companionship, loyalty and a big heart to offer a mature adopter. His gratitude and engagement belie the unconditional love resting in this sweet pup. Diesel, a senior Houlagan looking for his home.

UPDATE: Diesel has moved into The Yard. Fifteen other dogs play around him. He has raised beds to lounge and bushes to paw around (hot weather = dig in the dirt.) The Old Gentleman has relaxed and become a wonderful old friend.
