Lionel is a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel mix rescued from the Devore Animal Shelter. He weighs approximately 18 lbs. While the shelter paperwork states he is age one, we think he's closer to age two. Lionel is a very non-aggressive, affectionate and active dog. He likes playing with humans and other dogs but prefers just being with humans whatever you are doing. He likes to be on your lap for a little while but is not one to sit there for a long period of time. He loves to hang out with you, go for a walk, or sit quietly looking out the window. He adapts to his new surroundings quickly. Lionel lives in a foster home with three female dogs and one cat. He is fine with all friendly dogs, and he plays equally well with the 60 lb. Golden Retriever as well as with the 18 lb. West Highland Terrier. But he does want to chase the cat. He shows no aggression towards the other dogs but he is protective of his food (with dogs, not humans), but this has improved greatly while in foster care. Thus, he eats in his crate and not in the pack (he eats twice a day and all in one sitting rather than nibbling). He would also do well as a single dog; he does not appear to need the pack for a happy life.

Lionel is not a barker, but he will bark to alert, and does his best to keep squirrels out of the yard. He shows no signs of separation anxiety. He is generally potty-trained and has had no accidents in the foster home after the first couple of days. Potty reinforcement is always needed in any new environment. He is crate-trained and sleeps quietly in a crate at night in a room with the foster home’s own three dogs. He likes to go on walks and is slowly learning not to pull and wander. A training collar should be used at the beginning (a regular collar won’t do as he can squirm out of it when walking and it provides no correction ability). Lionel has had very little formal training prior to the foster home, but he is learning to sit and respond to corrections. Basic obedience training would be helpful.

Lionel is neutered, de-wormed, vaccinated including rabies, and micro-chipped. If you are interested in Lionel, please contact Angels Heart Dog Rescue at: adopt@angelsheartdogrescue.com.
