My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Carter was a timid dog when he first came into our care but has since learned that people are great and living in a home can be a wonderful thing. He loves all the attention he has received and has responded in kind by learning how to be a capable, fun-loving and affectionate companion. For a little dog he has a big personality. Also, he is very intelligent and with lots of positive reinforcement he has learned his basic commands and good doggy manners in the home. Carter is approximately 2 years old and currently weighs 24 lbs.

Here is what else Carter's foster family had to say:

Carter is really a wonderful companion. He has a huge personality and is not one bit shy to express himself. He loves both running around outside, eagerly sniffing everything and trying to chase squirrels, and snuggling into the laps of his humans (sometimes he sneaks into the bed as well and will happily stay there until removed). He loves to help with whatever work is being done in the kitchen, on the computer, at the desk, and is so excited for his morning walks that he jumps straight up with all fours, practically doing cartwheels. Carter also loooooves to play tug-of-war with his toys and will fetch anything that is thrown during playtime for more tug-of-war.

Carter wants all the attention of his human(s), the more the better, but will also settle happily into a warm bed on his own. This is where he can usually be found. He appears to be quite young, as he has tons of energy during playtime. He is probably within the 1-2 year range that was suggested to us. Carter’s energy levels are moderate, although he gets really excited during tug-of-war time. He also becomes comatose when it’s bedtime. He is generally very quiet in the home unless we are playing tug-o-war.

He is friendly with everyone (except squirrels) but he needs a firm hand to not get all beagly at larger dogs on walks. He loves to go meet other dogs on walks but acts much more dominant on walks than when he is in the home with them. He loves to wrestle with other dogs when in the home. He will need someone who can provide the structure and discipline to continue to teach him not to be dominant with large dogs. He does listen immediately to corrections however and there is no issue to walk on by without further ado. Carter growls playfully during tug-of-war and although some may think he sounds mean, it is just the way he plays. Carter annoys the 2 cats we have, but appears more curious than anything else.

Carter is actually quite well behaved for a Beagle. He’s always looking for food, but minds his doggy manners. He also knows and responds well to basic commands such as "come", "sit", and "drop it". He is house trained and will sit at the door and whine politely when he needs to go out. He is crate-trained. He is in the crate occasionally while we are sleeping. He is not yet fully leash trained and will still pull so he needs more work with this. Carter is all Beagle and if given the chance he will take off following his nose so he needs a securely fenced back yard. Carter LOVES car rides (especially when he’s allowed in the front seat).

Carter is super cute and likes to follow us around in the house to see what we’re up to. Attentive humans would be preferred! Carter would be best suited for a person or family in which he is the most important (or only) dog in the house. He does need attention, including both athletic running around time, and quite-down snuggle time. Carter would do best with adults only or a family with older children who would understand his playing and enjoy engaging with him.

If you think this intelligent boy would be a good fit for your situation, please submit an application for consideration.
