My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Fiona is definitely a survivor! She had obviously lived a very hard life before coming to our organization. One night she was picked up off the street by the Houston SPCA's ambulance after receiving a call of an injured dog. They asked us to rescue her, so we took her to our specialty vet to be evaluated. She had a broken hip and was also very malnourished, and tested high positive for heartworms. We were concerned that she might not be strong enough to go through everything that would be needed to restore her to good health, but the clinic staff said she had a strong spirit and they felt she could do it! So the vet performed an FHO surgery (femoral head ostectomy) on Fiona, and the very next day this determned little dog was trying to walk on all fours!

She went through an 8-week rehab on the hip recovery and had put on some weight, so we "socked it to her" again, and started the heartworm treatment. She pretty much breezed right through the heartworm treatment too! After another 6 weeks of recovery, her final medical trial was to have 2 growths removed, one on each side. She had 2 fairly large incisions and lots of stitches, and of course 2 more weeks of recovery. The best news of all is that after sending off the tissue to a lab for testing, the growths were not malignant and were fully excised!

So now our little "project" has become a happy, healthy, sleek 5-yr old, 24 lb., 15-inch beagle with a spring to her step and a busy agenda each day! She needs to check out the pesky squirrels that tease her from the top of the fence, she has to warm up the recliner for her foster dad, she has to beg for treats in the kitchen, and must always try to slip out into the garage whenever anyone goes out there, ever in hopes of taking a ride in the van! You would think that after all the bad things that happened to her after a ride in the van, that she might wonder if she is going to the vet clinic for yet another round of torture, but no!!, she is always up for a road trip! Every night we try to make time for a walk around the block, and Fiona is right there waiting for the leash to be snapped on her collar.

Fiona's wish for a perfect home would be a quiet one where she could go about her daily "chores" without bother from an extra-lively dog that would bug her to play (such as some of the current beagle pack in the foster home), without any large dogs that intimidate her (such as the German Shepherd that comes to visit at times), and without any overly active young children. Although her hip is now fully recovered and she can even jump up on chairs without help, she is still a petite beagle and not a strong and strapping one. She is a cuddly companion and would love to sleep in the bed with her humans but she is also content to curl up all night on a dog bed and will be quiet as a mouse all night. After the nightmarish life on the streets and the many medical procedures she has endured, Fiona deserves to live the good life from now on!

To meet Fiona or any of the other dogs on our website, please go to www.HoustonBeagleRescue.org and click on "About Adoption." There you will find a link to our online application to adopt, which is the first step in our process. We do not have a shelter facility so all our dogs are in foster homes throughout the Houston area, so you must start with the application in order to meet the beagle of your dreams!
