My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

DUKE is a 7 year old neutered chocolate male Lab who weighs 62 pounds. Duke #5 is a handsome chocolate guy that embodies all of the awesome lab traits. Duke loves to retrieve and also loves to swim. Duke is very affectionate and loving! He likes to be petted, he likes to lay underneath your feet and will push your feet up to do so, he likes to sleep in the bed with his people, and he also likes chest rubs while watching TV. Duke is house and crate trained, though hasn't been crated in years. Duke can and will jump a 3.5 foot fence. Duke previously lived with a 2 year old child and older children and did fine. He is very friendly and playful with other dogs. His evaluator said: "Duke was very excited to see me. He has a sweet personality. His weight is good, and his coat is beautiful. He is your typical Lab who loves everyone. He acts like a much younger dog and is frisky, happy and playful." From foster: Duke is very inquisitive and wants to put his nose into everything you are doing. He has calmed down some and is very friendly and gets along with the resident dog. He is very mouthy at feedings and when he wants to play. He does counter-surf so all food has to be put away and trash cans secured. His owner gave up to lab rescue due to changing work schedule. He is approved for kids 2+.

Update (3/24): Duke has been in our care for several months, and after he's been seen by different vets, the concensus is that he's much younger. Given his personality and level of energy, we're changing his age to 6-7 years old.

Updatae (2/25): Duke is doing really well in his foster home! He got happy tail again, it is being treated. His tail is constantly wagging. He is very very very friendly and loves everybody he meets. He has gotten better about staying out of the kitchen when food is being prepared. When the command "out" is given he goes and waits in the dining room. He always has to have something in his mouth, usually a tennis ball. He loves to chew on bones, chew toys or tennis balls but has never chewed anything he isn't supposed to. He and the resident female lab are getting along and play outside. He loves to go on walks and is good on leash, he will get a little excited when he sees another dog. He has been off leash in the woods and comes back when called. He has gotten in a small stream. He would probably like the water when it warms up. He has never tried to jump the fence. He loves to get his back scratched and will try and go between your legs for more or underneath your legs if you are sitting. He goes in his crate but doesn't need to be crated. He has been left up to 6 hrs with zero issue. He sleeps on his dog bed at night and makes a contented moaning sound when he lays down. He loves to play fetch and will bring the ball back to you and drop it when you tell him. He also helps when bringing firewood in by getting a stick or bark and bringing it in.

Update (2/04): Duke is a healthy 9 yr old who does not act his age. He loves to play fetch and explore the back yard. His foster has a 4 ft fence that he has never tried to climb or jump so he doesnt need a 6' fence if he is supervised. He likes to play chase with the resident dog outside although they do not play together in the house. Duke has picked up a few lbs so you can not see his ribs so easily. He is being fed 4 cups of proplan adult chicken & rice a day. He looks very healthy with a shiny coat. Duke is good with other dogs but doesn't like to always share his toys. He loves tennis balls and would like a football or volleyball of his own. Duke is a strong chewer so durable toys are best. Duke is approved for children 2 and older but he should be supervised during play and at feeding times since he gets very excited. Duke had a blast going off leash at a friend's property, running in the pasture and woods. He also loved exploring the stream. Duke would like an active family to love, his tail never stops wagging and he is a fun foster.

Update (2/01): Duke went on a long walk and he did well. He doesn't pull much and wanted to meet everybody he saw. He carried a tennis ball in his mouth much of the way. He has not tried at all to jump over the fence. He is very friendly and is becoming more laid back. We have left him out uncrated for a few hours while we were gone and he has done fine.

Update (01/21): Duke is getting along with the resident dog and would do best with another submissive dog who will share their toys with him. His fosters have been crating him when they leave. Duke recently met a very active 6 year old child. He came to her when called and she walked him with supervision. Duke is a strong chewer and likes any kind of toys, including soccer balls and footballs. He would love to have a family that would allow him to play with them.
