My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

LUNA is a 5 year old neutered black female Lab that weighs 68 pounds. She must go to a quiet household in a quiet neighborhood with a fenced yard and another dog. She is frightened by loud noises and/or fast movements. She needs the tutoring of another dog to show her the way.Her favorite activities are napping and hanging out with her foster brother. She has been left loose in the house for a few hours at a time and she was found snoozing when her humans returned. She did just fine even when left without her foster brother. She is quiet in her crate but she prefers the sofa. She will sniff around the yard but is eager to head back inside. She has not been out on walks. When she ventures further, a Martingale and/or harness is a must to be sure she doesn't slip her collar should she be startled. Her appetite is a bit limited right now but roast beef and canned salmon dog food capture her attention. Luna must have a quiet and calm household. Sudden movements and loud noises scare her. She prefers if you sit and let her come to you. If you approach her, she will shy away. She is very cautious around men and it will take some patience to win her over. Right now she will only approach her foster dad if he is sitting and offering roast beef. She did snuggle against him in bed. She will reward your patience with kisses and wags. She must have a fenced and secure yard, and she must go to a home with another dog as she really depends on the other dog to show her the way.
Luna previously lived chained with little shelter or care. She was one of five dogs all of whom were seized by the local authorities and all of whom have been rescued. She slipped out a gate during her rescue and was on the loose for two days. Through the dedicated efforts of a small group of volunteers and the Frederick County police, she was re-captured. During her two days on the loose she was seen swimming in the river and she traveled a distance. Because of this history, tremendous care must be taken to ensure she is leashed and/or in a secure fenced area at all times without fail. Luna is approved for kids ages 10+

Update (3/08): Luna is having some fun now that the weather has improved. She enjoys running after my dog while he plays fetch. She even joined in the fun inside when we played there. She has become quite the bedtime snuggler with me and my dog. She enjoys sharing a dog bed with him during the day. After a brief playtime, she is quick to settle in for another nap.

Update (2/27): Luna has had quite the week since my last update. She's a remarkably brave girl who's world has expanded a bit further. It's still small but growing every day. Her time in bed has flipped from 20 hours a day to only 2 or 3 and instead she chooses to hang out with Jake and I on the sofa and is enjoying it. Luna has found joy and happiness in being with her peeps. She took a while to trust but she's trusting me and asks for pets, attention and TREATS! Yup, treats are new for Luna. A non-foodie dog walked into my house two weeks ago and I've slowly been turning her into a Lab. She now loves treats and eats any / everything that's offered. Even better, she's started to come when I shake the treat bag with a bright, happy look in her eyes and a wag in her tail. That opens another door for sweet Luna.
Luna's also learned that squeaky toys ROCK!!! She will be brave for a squeaky toy and a game and that's how I've been introducing her to new places that she can be comfortable in in the house. She's very motivated by fun and Jake thinks that's fine with him...he's very motivated by fun too.
So it's baby steps for sure but they're coming quicker and quicker and just like a baby, she'll get to where she wants to go even if the journey takes a little while.
As you can see, Luna is a special girl with some special needs so I'll spell those out. 1. Another dog; she will be brave when my Jake is by her side, especially when it comes to getting petted in new places. Jake gets his pets and then Luna comes up for hers. 2. A solid fenced yard (no chain link or open slats). Her greatest joy is playing with Jake in the yard and she is not ready to head out the front door for a walk. 3. A very quiet home; ideally all female and small.
With time and patience (and a bit of cheese, roast beef and some squeaky toys) Luna is going to BURST out of her shell. Right now, I'm watching her tap at it like a chick trying to hatch. She's put a hole in the shell and is getting ready to come out of it. She's a doll. Love, easy to care for and a lab that loves fun. What more could you ask for?

Update (2/23): Luna had a great weekend; she celebrated several milestones that are going to help her keep growing. She putters in and out of the house like a pro and has started to come in and go to the sofa for a cuddle and snuggle with her foster mom and foster brother. She had been spending most of the day in the bedroom but has decided to hang out with us more instead. YAY. Luna's inside world is very calm. She is an incredible houseguest because lounging is her favorite thing to do. Want to watch a movie? No problem, just turn up the volume a bit to make up for the snoring you'll hear from your lap. Luna's outside world is filled with joy! She loves to play outside and pounces on the ball or toy if she can but lets the resident dog return it for another toss. She sometimes gives her foster mom a goose in the butt when she's playing and will come up to me for petting though it takes a few passes for her to build the courage to ask. But she gets one petting session outside whenever we can. Her tail wags and wags outside and she's doing more sniffing around which is great because it means she's comfortable enough to be curious. Luna is a pleasure to have in the home. Well mannered, cuddly and gives the gentlest kisses. Her personality is starting to show and she's becoming more playful and treat motivated.

She is still a very, very shy girl who's looking for a quiet, ideally all female home with a fenced yard. She's not ready to explore outside the front of the house but with love and patience there's no telling how far she will grow.

Update (2/20): Baby it's cold outside but Luna loves it though she also enjoys curling back up in the warm bed for some loving. Luna is a 5 year old black female in search of a very special home. She is a very, very shy girl who's just starting to learn about the world and the safety of a home. Her world is still very small; the house and the fenced yard.

Update (2/10): Luna is making progress but she is still a very timid sweetie. She loves to snuggle in bed and will follow me downstairs in the morning but she is skittish and sudden moves can send her back upstairs. She likes to head outside to chase after my dog while he plays fetch. She bounces and wags her tail but playtime lasts a short time. Luna is a low energy girl. At meal time, Luna does best in her crate so she doesn't get distracted. She loves to spend her day alternating between the dog bed in my office and my bed. Snoozing is her hobby! She will snuggle with the resident dog sometimes. Luna prefers women and keeps her distance from the resident man except in bed where she will allow him to pet her a bit.

Update (2/06): Luna would like a home with another dog. She enjoys snuggling with canines and humans. She has learned to play chase the ball (she runs along as my dog plays fetch) and it makes her tail wag. She is a huge fan of naps and she is a low-energy girl.

Update (01/28) : Luna enjoys hanging out in her foster mom's bed and on her dog bed. This girl loves to lounge and will snuggle up with the resident dog at bed time! She has perfect house manners and never barks. Luna prefers to meet one person at a time. Groups of people overwhelm her but she will be practicing her social skills in the coming weeks.

Update (01/21): Luna is wagging more each day and eating with enthusiasm. She was excited to see the snow, jumped around for a minute, ate a couple mouthfuls and headed back inside. We haven’t tried a walk just yet as she is sensitive to noise and movement. Luna prefers if you call her and she comes to you rather than have you approach her. If you do approach her she may back away initially. She loves to hang out on her dog bed and the human bed and she is the best snuggler at bed time. She has done well during the workday with a midday visit from her new friend, the dogwalker.

Update (01/20): Luna met the dog walker and Luna was initially hesitant about the new human. She ran up the stairs but with a little time and gentle loving, she was more comfortable and allowed the dog walker to pet her. Luna will need slow and thoughtful introductions to new people. Once she knows you, she is a sweetie. Tonight Luna tried steak. Yum! Her appetite is improving, too.

Update (01/18): Luna is low key and well mannered. She has learned a lot in the past few days and she takes her lead from her foster brother. Initially, she was happy to sleep in her crate but she has discovered how nice home life can be. She was quick to go up the stairs but was hesitant going down the first few times. Now she does it with ease. She followed her foster brother up on the sofa yesterday and is now often found stretched out there. Soft and cushy is nice. The first night she slept on the rug but last night she followed her foster brother up on the human bed. She loved snuggling up with her humans and slept soundly through the night. She also likes hanging out with her foster brother on his dog bed.
