Mindy and her brother Mork arrived hungry and frightened underneath a thrift store porch. At approximately 12 weeks old, they had almost missed their window for being properly socialized. They were timid and un-trusting. Despite multiple environmental adjustments, Mindy failed to make any significant progress and PAWS staff became very worried that she would never be interested in being a pet and thus never adopted.

Then, a Guardian Angel stepped in! A set of experienced foster parents agreed to take these two timid cats in and begin the long and tedious process of "taming" Mork and Mindy. They quickly discovered that the key was in the kibble-- Mindy is highly food motivated! After a mere 3 weeks of foster placement, Mindy had made tremendous progress. Her foster mommy says: "Mindy is progressing so well. She's comfortable being held (unless she wants to get down and explore). She's sitting relaxed in our laps at times. She's becoming more comfortable with the dogs, so she'll sit in our lap with the dog on the couch next to us. She's very comfortable loose in the room with us... She likes to explore and play. She likes a scratching post. We think the key to Mindy's progress is patience and food."

Even since that update, Mindy has become more and more of a lap cat. She needs a home of her own now!

Now, these cats desperately need a forever home. There is a chance of regression if she or Mork has to re-enter a shelter environment.

Our adoption process:
It is our goal to match each animal with the most compatible home, based on their personality and temperament. In order to do this we ask that all potential adopters fill out an adoption interview, as well as talk with a staff member about what they are looking for in a new pet. By doing this we can better match adoptee with an adopter. Resulting in forever homes!

About Placing Animals Within Society: P.A.W.S.

About Our Shelter...

We are a small no-kill shelter founded in 1990. We are the only shelter in the county and rely solely on donations and the sales from our thrift store. We are small enough that each dog (15 max) and each cat (16 max) get individual attention. We have created a home-like environment in our shelter to give the animals as close to a real home while they wait to be adopted. HSUS had dubbed us "the little shelter that could" when the state rep came out and saw all that we accomplish as a very small organization. We have adopted out over 2,500 animals and have financially assisted the community in over 9,000 spay/neuter surgeries. We have 2 full-time staff and rely on volunteers to help us with all there is to do. Volunteers are very important to the success of P.A.W.S. and there are many opportunities not only at the shelter, but in our thrift store, fundraising, administrative, festivals and media contact.

Come Meet Our Pets...

Thanks to our small staff and a couple of very dedicated volunteers, we have a wonderful group of socialized and happy dogs and cats at the shelter. We are open to the public Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 10:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. just a 2 minute drive from downtown Bryson City. Give us a call for more info at 828-488-0418 and say you found us on!

Our Adoption Process...

The adoption fee is $65 for a cat or $85 for a dog unless we have incurred significant medical expenses. We do not adopt out dogs as guard dogs, or animals that will be "outside only" pets. Our feline residents are required to be adopted as inside-only pets.
