My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

AJAX: 3 year old neutered male yellow Lab 75 lbs

"Country Roads, Take Me Home" could be Ajax's theme song. Lab Rescue thinks he is a true country boy who is happiest where he has plenty of room to explore.

His foster reports:

Ajax is a swimmer, and he loves to play ball. He would be a good hunting companion: when his fosters’ neighbor took him on a trial upland hunt, he did well: “not afraid of gunfire, uses his nose, fetches well." His coat is thick and full, and he is in excellent health, according to the vet. He is friendly with people, but independent and often entertains himself. AND Ajax gets along with and is respectful of our 3 sometimes grumpy old dogs, sniffs and then ignores our cats, and has visited our neighbor's cows and chickens without incident.

Ajax is resilient and a quick learner. As a stray, he spent 3 weeks in a shelter before Golden Gate Lab Rescue rescued him. During those 3 weeks, he went from “very social” and “seems nice” to “overstimulated -- can get very rough” according to shelter staff notes. Life in a small cage, the noisy shelter, and a bout of kennel cough were just too much for him. We think that in his previous home he was used to fresh air and freedom. Though he was probably never an inside pet, he’s very affectionate and was obviously treated kindly by his humans. Now that he's back in the country on 5 acres near Vacaville with his fosters, he’s recovering smoothly from his long stay at the shelter, and learning the rules of in-house living. His curiosity leads to occasional counter-surfing, and he’s OK with being crated as he learns to be an indoor dog. We think he's very trainable and will make a good companion. He is learning house rules, how to walk well on a leash, and his potty training is coming along. He IS an escape artist, who loves to explore the world, but comes back when called, especially if you have a treat in your pocket! (How does he know?).

What Lab Rescue wants for Ajax:

Ajax will need continued training and reinforcement, but he's a responsive, intelligent dog. Because he's big & goofy, he's more suited to life with adults and/or teens than little ones. He needs plenty of exercise, room to roam, stability and patience from his humans. In return, he'll provide affection, good company (and could be a great hunting/hiking/outdoor companion).

If you think you can provide the right home for this energetic young boy, contact Lab Rescue Rep Liz by phone 415-613-6374 or email liz@jobshopsf.com.

(Please keep in mind we are all volunteers, most of us work full time and we all have personal lives. I do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient and I will be back in touch with you. When the dogs are in foster homes then it may take longer as we need to touch base with the fosters for updates on the dogs. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week and we do not have a facility that we keep the dogs housed in. They are scattered all over the Bay Area.)
