My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

GUS: 1 ½ year old black lab Male Neutered 95 lbs.

Gus’s story is typical of most Labs. Cute puppy who grew up into a wild child and before the owners had time to realize what was happening; they were way in over their heads with a dog who needed a lot more training and exercise than they could provide. (They purchased Gus from a breeder and before you knew it he was no longer this cute cuddly puppy but now he was a large 95 pound dog!) Gus’s out of control behavior lead to him being kept in the crate a lot of the time. (The owners would crate Gus around 20 – 22 hours per day.) This lack of exercise and exposure made Gus go even crazier. The owners could not afford professional help and instead turned to GGLRR. (They considered putting him down or taking to the shelter until they found Lab Rescue. They were now afraid of him.)

We asked a professional trainer if she could go meet Gus for us as he sounded like a dog we could take into our program but we needed to understand what Gus’s issues may be. The trainer met Gus and felt like he was a great dog but needed exercise and leadership and she took him into her home to foster and train him. Three weeks later and this is what she has to say about Gus.

What she has to say about Gus:

Gus was out of control when I picked him up from his previous owners, I could not even get a collar on him. (When the trainer would try to put a collar on him he would go crazy. She finally figured out the second day that because of his collar issue his owners never took off his choke chain and he had grown into it. It took two people to get it off of him!) He has so much pent up energy and wanted attention so much he would jump and scratch me non-stop. Gus has never showed any signs of aggression but would jump and mouth so much I was not sure it would get better. After a few weeks of exercise, leadership and obedience training Gus is a new dog! He is just over a year old and other than needing to continue to lose some weight he is very healthy. Gus has responded beautifully to his training and now is much calmer. He allows me to take his training collar off and on as I need, he walks without pulling on the leash and he is crate trained. Gus does well with other dogs and loves to go swimming in the nearby river. Gus also does well off leash. Gus will need continued training and because of this he would do best in a home with kids over the age of 8. We want him to go to a home that will continue his training and get him plenty of exercise.

When Gus is adopted we will do a hand off session with the trainer and we will want the adopters to follow what the trainer has done with Gus over the last few weeks.

Gus is neutered, he has his shots, he is microchipped, he is heartworm negative and he has no health issues. He is located in Geyserville.

(Please keep in mind we are all volunteers, most of us work full time and we all have personal lives. I do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient and I will be back in touch with you. When the dogs are in foster homes then it may take longer as we need to touch base with the fosters for updates on the dogs. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week and we do not have a facility that we keep the dogs housed in. They are scattered all over the Bay Area.)
