My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

THIS IS A COURTESY POSTING. THiS DOG DOES NOT BELONG TO HAPPY TAILS HAPPY HOMES. WE HAVE NEVER MET THIs DOG AND RECOMMEND PROSPECTIVE ADOPTERS TO DO THEIR OWN EVALUATION. ALL INQUIRIES AND APPLICATIONS WILL BE FORWARDED TO THE OWNER."

Calypso or “Cal” as we call her, is an extremely bright girl with a mellow temperament. She came to us last summer unexpectedly, as she’d been abandoned on a nearby boat in our marina. The owner moved back to California and Cal was locked up for two days on his old boat.
Since becoming a member of our pack, she has adjusted well. She and our three-yr-old tabby have a congenial enough working relationship. Cal likes to be integral in all things pack-related and, as is typical with her breed characteristics, prefers to herd us as we move around.
She is a friendly dog—inquisitive and happy. She responds amicably to other dogs when off leash, however is growly and barks when on-leash. We’ve learned recently that her original owner was a “street-person” by choice and raised Cal from a puppy to watch over him when he slept outside. She shies away from loud noises (like power tools and smoke alarms), but she is a very good watch dog. She does get distressed when my daughter and husband play around or wrestle. (Although we have heard from other cattle dog owners that this is also a common breed characteristic).
Our daughter recently chatted with some folks who recognized Cal while they were on a walk. They mentioned that the dog had whelped several litters while in the possession of the former owner. Her maternal instinct is very prominent and she often licks at things in her sleep—we figure this is due to the many puppies she’s had in her lifetime.
She is currently on an all-meat dry-food diet, since we’ve learned that the grain in her previous food contributed to skin allergies. Cal likes to sleep a lot—as long as she is with her people. She does not like to be left alone in our boat, but is quite comfortable being left in the car, and at times will walk over to be let in the car for a nap while my husband works in his shop. (We find she treats it sort of like her “crate”).
We love this dog immensely and would not think of moving her to a new home, except for the challenges she faces living aboard our boat. The compainionways are very steep—almost like ladders—and to move between decks (living spaces), she must be lifted up or allowed to jump down the five steps. As she ages, we worry about the impact this will have on her joints, particularly her front legs. It would also be beneficial for Cal to have more outdoor spaces in which to exercise. She seems content, but we notice that she’s putting on more weight (which will only serve to exacerbate the joint problem).
Because she is so people-dependent and because she came to us as an abandoned dog, we feel it is crucial to find a suitable “forever-home” for this sweet girl. We couldn’t bear the thought of her being moved around from home to home and would rather continue to foster her on our boat than see her abandoned again.
Please help us find the right pack for this charming dog.
