My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Kona: 5-6 year old spayed female chocolate lab, ~ 55 pounds

Kona’s story: Kona came to us over a year ago, originally from the San Jose shelter. Her owner just dumped her there in the street, alone, when the person she needed to speak to wasn’t there. She was filthy, itchy and clearly not well cared for. The shelter called Lab Rescue and said that she was a sweet girl, and because they have so many dogs to help who are not Labs, that they hoped Lab Rescue could find someone who would love her and take care of her. We took Kona into our program, and she was adopted by a family who loved her. Unfortunately, Kona has allergies which require regular maintenance. She is a young energetic dog, and while chasing a ball, caught her foot in a hole and had a serious break to her leg. The medical expenses were more than her family could handle, and they called Lab Rescue to find Kona a new home.

Kona is a sweet, petite chocolate lab. She is cuddly and will give gentle kisses. She takes a treat gently from your hand. We think she has had some training and knows sit, and will wait for her dinner. She goes into her crate when told to, and she is a very smart girl!

Kona rides quite nicely in the car. Kona’s foster family includes a lovely senior lab, and she gets along quite well with her.

Kona’s food allergies are something which will need to be managed. They have caused some hair loss around her eyes, on her legs and parts of her belly. We have her on a limited ingredient diet and her fur seems to be recovering. Most of her fur is full and glossy, and a lovely shade of semi sweet chocolate! Her broken leg has healed, and she is walking normally on the leg. Her muscles in that leg will need some time and regular walks to build back up. She is an energetic girl, and regular walks will not only help build her fitness and stamina, they will keep her eager little mind occupied and out of trouble. A tired dog is a good dog! Overall, Kona is a very healthy dog.

What Kona’s foster mom says about Kona:

Kona is a little love bug who follows me around the house, always eager to help. :) She tucks her head into me, I rub her head or belly, she closes her eyes, and is lost in bliss. Kona gets along great with my lab, they love going on walks together. Because Kona's leg is still healing, she won't be ready for a rough and tumble dog park scene for at least another month. Kona is learning to take treats gently and to approach other dogs calmly. Her skin condition is improving with medicated baths and a non-starch food. Kona's new people will be getting a sweet, curious, smart, little girl who wants to be with them always.

Kona super sweet dog, and deserves a wonderful home. She loves humans, and while she would be fine in a home with another dog, her real preference is to hang out with the humans, as she just loves human attention. We’d like Kona to go to a home where someone is with her a good portion of the day and has the time and experience to continue working on and reinforcing her training, as well as committed to managing her allergies. A retired couple, or a family where someone works from home, or can take her to work, would be ideal. Managing her allergies mostly involves providing a limited ingredient diet and frequent baths, as well as being vigilant in watching for ear infections, which many Labs are prone to. Kona would be fine with kids, but because of her leg, any children in the family would need to be old enough to understand that rough play is not going to be good for her. She doesn’t seem to have been all that well cared for her in the first part of her life, so we’d like to make sure that the rest of her life is as wonderful as this sweet dog deserves.

Kona is housebroken, up to date on her shots, spayed, microchipped, and heartworm free. If you would like to add this lovely girl to your family, and are interested in learning more about this sweet dog, and, please contact Rescue Rep Debbi at 408-613-2044.

(Please keep in mind we are all volunteers, most of us work full time and we all have personal lives. I do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient and I will be back in touch with you. When the dogs are in foster homes then it may take longer as we need to touch base with the fosters for updates on the dogs. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week and we do not have a facility that we keep the dogs housed in. They are scattered all over the Bay Area.)
