My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Let me introduce you to Pugzy. She is a 5 year old Pug and Chihuahua mix that weighs a whopping 6.5lbs! This small cutie is a nice sized dog for any living situation. She’s a total lap dog and loves every rub that comes her way. She’s tan in colour with coarse thick hair that sheds moderately, however if you have a sweater on her, the shedding is minimal. She’s a spunky little girl who wants to get lots of love, but also give equally as much back. She very much has the look of a Pug in miniature, but is mostly like a Chihuahua in personality.

Pugzy was named as I sat in my living room with the image of Pugzy in my head and thought “she’s such a Pug, but she’s a tiny cutie and needs a cutsie kind of name”. That’s when I came up with Pugzy, and with all the other names I came up with, that’s the one I kept going back to. She is just so Pugzy!! She is a dog who will not leave your side, even if you’re going to the bathroom. She will sit in front of you and stare at you as if to say “are you done yet so we can snuggle some more?” if you don’t shut the door. She’s quite the comical character! When you choose her, she also chooses you back and there’s no mistaking her love for you.

Pugzy ended up in the pound after being abandoned by her previous owner. How her previous owner could be so cruel is beyond comprehension. It's for the best though because Pugzy deserves a family who is as devoted to her as she will be to them. She needs to belong in a home where she will get lots of love and praise, and where she can be confident in that fact that she is home forever and will never be tossed away.

Pugzy would do well in pretty much any home situation. She is calm and quiet indoors and loves to people watch while relaxing. She would do well in an apartment setting as well as a condo or a house as long as she can spend quality time with you. She is not a dog that requires excessive running or activity which is ideal for someone who is not able to be too active themselves. She is more than happy being taken out for quick trips to the potty in the backyard, especially when it is cold. But when the better weather arrives Pugzy will be more than happy to increase her walks and explore.

What Pugzy loves best though is snuggles and pets. She is happiest when she's getting belly rubs while lying in your arms like a baby, or when she's getting pets as she's lying on your lap snoozing the time away. Before having Pugzy, I thought I knew what a lap dog was. She has completely opened my eyes to what the true meaning of a lap dog is, and it’s completely adorable! She can't get enough love and affection. Pugzy adores her people and will be a terrific companion to someone looking for a snuggly, affectionate little buddy.

She was also perfectly behaved as she got her nails trimmed at the vet, and she’s very well behaved while getting examined or having bloodwork done. Pugzy has been such a good girl during her stay with us, and to top it off has been perfectly housetrained even before we had the privilege of caring for her. She is also crate trained and comfortably sleeps in her crate when we are away from the house. She has been an easy dog to foster and an even easier dog to love. There’s been many times where we look at each other and ask how anyone could give her up.

Pugzy is still a bit insecure and is not very comfortable around other dogs. We are looking for a home for her where she will be the only dog. She hasn’t been exposed to cats but we do not see her being too much of a bother with a cat, and besides, most cats outweigh her and will put her in her place. Pugzy is not being fostered in a home with children but we believe she would love the attention she would get from quieter kids who would love to pet her and play nicely with her in the yard. She would not do well with young children though as she is small and somewhat fragile and cannot tolerate rough handling. And we feel that Pugzy would prefer a quite home so a busy home with young, active children would not suit her. But quiet kids over 12yrs of age would be considered for her as long as the family was experienced with dogs, knows the Chihuahua breed well and will monitor when friends are over etc. Chihuahua’s bond very strongly with their family but don’t always appreciate a lot of strangers in their home. So a busy household with a lot of visitors may not be suitable for her. She may be a bit shy with strangers initially but if given time to get to know visitors on her own accord she accepts new people quickly…especially if treats are involved!

Pugzy is being taught basic obedience in her foster home and knows "sit", “stay”, “get down” and is working very hard to understand the command “go to your bed” and “lay down” the first time it’s said. Pugzy is attending a level 1 obedience school to socialize her and work on her obedience skills in a distracting environment. Just because she is small does not mean that she shouldn’t be well trained and her foster family is very committed to doing right by Pugzy and teaching her to be a lovely member of society. Pugzy's new family will need to commit to continuing her obedience training to bring out the best in this very smart dog. She shows great enthusiasm when you work with her to learn new things and is extremely happy when she knows she performed the command well. The worst mistake some people make with the small dogs is not training them well and carrying them everywhere which leads to an unsocialized, fearful dog. We are making sure that while Pugzy is in our care she is being greatly loved, but also, treated like a dog, and is being well trained, exercised and she has rules. Pugzy has come a long way and is a well-adjusted dog and her new family will need to continue this.

As a final note, Pugzy did have a mild seizure while in our care. She came out of it very quickly and had no after effects. We took her to the vet and had bloodwork done and all was normal. She does not require medication and she has not had another in our care to date. We have held Pugzy back from adoption to see if she would have another one and weeks have passed and she is clear. Our vet cannot say if this is an isolated event or if she is a dog that may have the occasional seizure. Even if this is the case and she may have the occasional seizure this is easily manageable and does not affect her daily life. We wanted to be forthright with this info and make sure that anyone interested in Pugzy know everything we know about her. It is a minor issue and her foster family can attest to the fact that she is well worth loving and the one seizure she had did not take away from the tremendous love and affection she gives on a daily basis. Other than this one event she is a happy and healthy dog who deserves a great, loving home and is looking for a forever home to share her love. She is looking for a forever lap to cuddle on. Could this be yours?

All Pound Dog Rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested, de-wormed (if required), and microchipped prior to adoption. The adoption donation of $400 is applied to assist in the costs of veterinary care and the overall care of the dog.
