My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

DUKE is a 2 year old neutered black male Lab who weighs 51 pounds. DUKE is a handsome smaller guy who loves to be petted, touched and to go for walks. He's a little shy right now, but who can blame him after all the noise at the shelter? He loves other dogs! From LR evaluator: Duke is a sweetie. He is a very cute black Lab and he’s a bit shy. He liked being petted and touched. He would not take snacks from anyone but liked to be leashed and walked. Great with other dogs: he actually seems to perk up and gain confidence when a dog comes around. May do best if placed with another dog in foster. From LR transporter: Duke is a shy boy. I can’t wait to see him after better nutrition, rest and some TLC. He is just beautiful! He is approved for kids 10+.

Update (7/1): Welcome back Duke! Duke's full time foster is on vacation so we get to fill in again. He came in like he'd never left and has quickly settled back into our routine. What can I say about Duke. He's super easy to love. He's the quietest, calmest 2 year old I've ever met. He goes to his crate with a simple 'kennel up' and likes his meals served in his crate. He's most frequently found snuggling with or near the resident dogs but he likes to make sure that I'm not doing something super exciting without him so he stays close to me too. You can see that he's a petite fellow able to curl up on the back cushions of the sofa. I think it's so that he can see the TV!
We love this boy here. Easy, peasey puppy love!

Update (6/26): Little Duke has undergone quite the transformation since my last update. He's become the leader of the pack when we go on our group walks each day. He's decided that snuggling with foster dad in bed is really fun.
But the biggest difference is TOYS! When Duke first arrived he looked at the resident dogs like they were crazy to be so taken with toys. He'd stand back and watch them. Slowly but surely, he's gotten more curious and it's been fun to watch him start with a 'pounce and sniff and walk away' and then take his first tentative chew. And, then a game of tug with the resident dog. Now, he's all about toys...big ones, small ones, stuffed ones, and chew ones.
It's amazing what a bit of time, patience and the leadership of a few good role model dogs will do. Duke is just a great guy. He's going to be the best family pet someone could wish for.

Update (6/19): Duke is an adorable 2 year with perfect house manners. He loves to go for walks, play in the yard, and spend time with his family. He is also very good at cuddling.

Update (6/4): Duke has settled in nicely to the routine in our house. The two resident Labs really help him with knowing just what to do. Today, he decided to investigate the fuss over toys. I did a load of dog toy laundry and pulled three out of the dryer to the backyard. Duke eyed one and I could see he was interested so I gave the other two their toy toss and then squeaked until Duke came up to investigate and bow. A gentle toss in the air led to a POUNCE! He didn't know what to do after that so I helped by repeating. He's getting the idea now.
He's such a good boy. I've had two long days in a row outside the house and I say 'kennel up' and into the crate he goes and then settles on his bed till I come home.
He's very gentle and loves to snuggle most when he's in bed. I get the two paws buried underneath me, head in my shoulder and SNORE!!!! A deep, rumbling snore. By morning he's draped over the resident labs in a puppy puddle.
When I'm working at home he just picks a spot on the sofa and curls up until it's time to do something exciting. Hasn't made a peep except to snore when he's sleeping deeply.
He's super easy going, very sweet and gentle and gets more settled with every day. While he will need some time to settle into his new home, the rewards for his new family will be great. Give this boy a chance!

Update (5/29): Duke is a real doll. He's very calm for such a young Lab and prefers to snuggle with his companion dogs and humans over romping and playing. He will be a dream for anyone who looks at photos of dogs all curled up together and says 'aw'. He is a shy boy. He's been with me for a couple of days and is still getting comfortable with everything. We let him do his own thing in his own time and he gets braver by the hour. His house manners are great. He just settles in a comfy spot and is happiest if one or both of the resident Labs are settled in that same spot with him. He's got looks and love...a perfect member of this pack!

Update (5/20) Duke came back because of owner medical condition. They could not take care of him. From his foster Duke is doing great. He is just the sweetest little guy who loves the company of people and other dogs. He spends his days following me around the house, playing with the dog toys and is even beginning to mix it up with the two resident labs. He likes to be outside in the backyard and loves to go for walks. He is good on his leash but can startle easily by a loud sound or sudden movement so a harness is recommended when walking him. He settles down in the evenings and loves to snuggle with anyone who is willing and able. He has excellent house manners, he is house and crate trained and never barks. He is a little cautious in new situations or with new people; however, he figures things out quickly and adapts. Duke needs to go to a home with another dog and that has a yard with a physical fenced He would also do best with someone who is home during the day.

Update (4/10): Duke is a sweet little guy! He is house trained and has had no issues there. He does counter surf so needs some work on that. He sleeps in the crate at night and is quiet as a mouse, he doesn't love to go in but is fine once in there. Duke LOVES to go for walks and is very good on a leash. However, he will lunge after squirrels. He is a bit underweight and he is eating three meals a day. He probably needs to gain about 5 lbs. He's a quiet guy and we have yet to hear him bark. He is great with the resident children (ages 14 and 12). He settled in quickly and is very out going. He may be a little cautious in a new situation but he quickly figures it out and moves on.

Update (4/9): Duke is the perfect pocket size lab. He has a beautiful lab head and very soulful eyes. He is a little skinny right now and needs to gain a few pounds. He is very sweet and loving with everyone he meets and enjoys the company of other dogs. He settled into his foster family’s routine quickly and his tail has not stopped wagging since he arrived. He likes to follow his foster around the house and really enjoys receiving belly rubs and cuddles from everyone. He is a good companion to the other dogs; he hasn’t tried to join the play time yet but is definitely interested in what the others are doing. He just started to pick up the toys that are around the house but isn’t quite sure what to do with them. He LOVES to go for walks and is very good on his leash. He is such a sweet and loving boy!
