My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Buddy is a gentle giant that just loves to be loved. He likes people of all ages and gets along well with other dogs. He would chase cats. He is an adult dog that just enjoys hanging out with people, going for walks and lots and lots of cuddle time. Buddy is approximately 4 - 5 years old and currently weighs 145 lbs.

Here is what his foster family had to say:

Buddy knows that he is the biggest dog in the neighborhood. Outside of the house he conducts himself in a regal nature. Despite his size Buddy enjoys to go on long walks and being in nature. He is is quick to adapt to different environments and terrain. He loves the excitement and all the people at the climbing gym as well as the solitude found in conservation areas. Buddy is healthy and has slowly began eating regularly as he grows more accustomed to his new home. He is low energy, and extremely affectionate, gets tired quite easily and sometimes needs breaks on walks to recharge. Buddy’s energy level fluctuates frequently. At home he his very laid back and easy going but as soon as he gets a leash on he becomes as inquisitive and loves a good walk, until he gets tired, and lies down. Dropping his leash and continuing with your walk immediately gets him walking again.

Buddy is extremely friendly. He enjoys getting belly rubs and has no hesitation about lying on his back to be petted. On walks Buddy frequently gets praise from elderly people. He is very social. He makes himself approachable and non- threatening to all people he encounters. When Buddy first encounters another dog he is intrigued and curious. He never barks and exhibits normal behaviour. When he encounters a cat he becomes alert and will try to chase it.

He fears the vacuum. Not much else! Buddy’s favourite things to do include; walking around the block, being belly-rubbed, sitting in your lap, and sleeping. Buddy is quiet and gentle. He has only woofed once since we received him, at a raccoon on a hike. He whimpered at first when being crated, but now it is a normal and easy process. He does not have any bad habits or anxiety. In the shelter we were told that he was showing signs of being possessive around food with other dogs but we have not witnessed this behaviour while in foster care.
Buddy’s manners are still a work in progress. If someone is sitting on “his” couch he will attempt to sit on their lap. When we are eating at the table Buddy will attempt to put his head on your lap. He steals shoes but does not chew/destroy them. He never counter surfs and seldom begs for food. He has a basic understanding of commands. At home he responds to “sit” and his name. He doesn't know stay, and drop it. Outside on walks at an intersection he responds to “stop” and “go.” Buddy is fully house trained. Even in exciting environments no accidents have occurred. Buddy is crate trained. We use a crate whenever we are sleeping or when everyone is away from home. He is typically left in the crate overnight for seven hours and during the day for 3 hours while we attend class. He is initially hesitant about going in the crate but in a couple of minutes he falls asleep.

Buddy has no problem putting a leash. His behaviour on the leash is good but has room for improvement. Buddy is inquisitive about the world around him and sometimes this results in him pulling on the leash. A tug on the leash quickly modifies this behaviour. Despite his laid back personality Buddy does try to get outside when the door is being opened. He is always eager to go on a walk and responds well when it is time to put on a leash. On the few occasions Buddy has ridden in a car he sits in the back and sprawls on the seats. He is not interested in sticking his head out the window and is not fidgety.

Buddy’s basic needs are food, shelter, water and petting. If he can find a loving home, with a family, large house, and yard, he will be ecstatic. Buddy is a gentle giant. He will thrive in an environment that has a lot of space for him to roam in and other animals/people are available to socialize in. Buddy has a giant heart; a larger house with a small family in a rural or urban area would be perfect for him.

If you have room in your home and your heart and would like to add Buddy as a member of your family, please submit an application for consideration.
