My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

UMDR ID#015-0307 - Hank's Rescue was Sponsored by Linda Sinker of Georgetown

Hank is a darling little dog who wants nothing more than to be close to his person. He is cuddly and playful and will take whatever chance he gets to give you a surprise lick on the face. Being a Miniature Pinscher x Beagle (aka Meagle) he combines attributes of both breeds. Sometimes when he is playing, he will kick with his back legs which is apparently a Min Pin thing, and very funny to watch. He also has big, beautiful brown eyes, that make him look like an adorable puppy. Hank is approximately 1 - 1 1/2 years old and currently weighs 24 lbs.

Here is what else his foster family had to say:

Whoever adopts Hank should know that he is truly a sweetheart, and is kind of a “velcro dog.” He becomes attached quickly and strongly and will be near you…preferably on your lap, as much as he can. Overall Hank appears to be happy and healthy. He is playful, and energetic when you get him going. He is generally calm and relaxed but has bursts of puppy energy when he is playing, and wants to be chased around the house/yard. I would say he is a moderate energy dog: content to sleep next to you when you’re busy, and full of energy when you’re ready to play or go for a walk. He is a very nice silky, smooth coat but he does shed.

Hank is very friendly with people. He has done well with children, but seems to prefer older children/adult to young kids. He loses interest quickly in the little ones. Hank does get shy of my dad sometimes, but that only seems to happen when my dad is in the kitchen. I think he’s afraid of the toaster going off and thus avoids anyone who is near it. He is very fearful of sudden noises (ie. the toaster popping, or someone dropping the broom). When these things happen he can be found cowering in a corner. I have to coax him out gently, but once he’s out of his hiding spot, he is fine again. We do not have any other pets in the house so I cannot comment on his behaviour in that situation. When we encounter other dogs on walks he seems interested in, and friendly with the little ones, and fearful/timid around large dogs. He has been in full pursuit of all the stray cats we have come across on our walks so he would definitely need to be socialized with cats, otherwise he will chase them.

Hank is pretty good when we leave the house. I do not crate him, but I do close the doors to the washroom and any other room I don’t want him going into. He is generally well behaved and seems to just sit on the couch looking out the window until I return, but he has once or twice ripped up paper towels he found in the garbage. Other than that he has not been destructive at all, and has never had any accidents in the house. Hank loves to play! He is the first dog that I’ve fostered who can entertain himself for hours with a toy. He will throw his ball up in the air and catch it himself. He loves to run around the yard doing this. Another favourite pass time of Hank’s is digging. This can be an issue, but he listens very well to the command “no” and stops right away. He is very quiet in the home. If it weren’t for him snoring in his sleep, you’d hardly know he was around.

Hank's house manners have been very good. He generally does not try to steal food or chew things he shouldn’t, but if he does get a hold of something, he stops right away when he hears a firm “no." In his time with me, Hank has learned the basic commands: come, sit, down, leave it, off. He has also learned some razzle dazzle moves like rollover, and crawl. He is very smart and extremely food motivated. So much so that he has selective hearing unless a treat is involved. Hank is fully house trained and has not had any accidents while being in my care. He is not crate trained. I haven’t used a crate at all. Hank is not leash trained. He pulls quite a bit. I have been working with him, and he has gotten better, but I think he would do better in a halter instead of a collar. Hank never tries to bolt out the door. He does however need a secure yard and a watchful eye to make sure he doesn’t get himself into trouble. Hank does well in the car, enjoying the wind in his ears with his head out the window. If he’s got a toy he will settle down on the back seat and chew away until you reach your destination.

Hank is a very sweet little dog who just wants to be near you and make you happy. He will mirror your energy level, calm when you need him to be and playful when you’re ready for him. He is slightly big for a lapdog, but he has no clue. Hank is looking for a lap to curl up in for the rest of his days. I think Hank would do well in a home with adults and older children. I think he would love to be part of an active family who would take him for walks and hikes, and play with him in the yard every day. He would love it if someone was around most of the day, as he does get very attached. That being said, he can be left alone for 5-6 hours without much issue. Hank would probably enjoy the companionship of another small dog friend to play with during the day.

If you think Hank would be a good addition to your family, please submit an application for consideration.
