My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

MARINER is an 8 year old spayed black female Lab who weighs 65 pounds. She is a sweet and shy girl. She's been in a foster home discovering what it's like to live like an indoor dog. She goes out with the resident dogs with minimal guidance from foster mom to get her over the tile. She's now greeting foster mom with butt-wagging tail happiness when she comes down in the morning. She really loves her human sister. Mariner likes to sleep in too – she goes out at 11 pm and out again in the morning between 7:30 and 8 and she has no issues. She is doing better with people approaching her. She will benefit from having another dog around as long as it was a calm one to hang out. She hasn't been crated at all – she's had no accidents, no barking, no eating things she shouldn’t. She does collect the dog toys at night but doesn’t chew on them. She is fine on the leash but a little worried. Like any other shy dog, she definitely needs to be walked with a harness just so she can’t slip if she gets scared. Mariner is approved for kids ages 10+.

Note: Not suitable for apartment/townhouse setting. This is a shy girl looking for a quiet neighborhood and calm living environment. Must have a fenced yard. NO EXCEPTIONS

Update (9/25): Sweet Mariner is the best little Lab looking for a new forever family. She's so happy - a master at wagging - and her house skills are perfect (shh...don't tell people with countersurfers but there's been an open bag of dogfood on the kitchen floor for two weeks)
Now, I know that everyone hates the easy going labs so I'll spell out a Mariner day.
Wake up, wag at foster mom, cruise the backyard, supervise breakfast prep, eat breakfast, cruise the backyard and keep foster mom company while she has her morning coffee. Nap until we go out again and we cruise the backyard *new twist to this this week, nap until we go out again, repeat dinner, repeat wag, cruise etc...cookies and cuddles before bed...zzzzz. You can see how hard she is to take care of. Our new twist to cruising the backyard. Mariner has become part of the cleaning crew. She loves to go out and find the toys in the backyard and bring them back into the house. I had NO IDEA there were that many balls and toys back there but they're slowly coming inside. Jake says 'thank you Mariner...now mom can clean the balls so I can bring them out again'.
Her only need is a fenced yard because she really, really doesn't want to do the big walks but she loves cruising the yard.

Update (9/15): Mariner's been here three days...the magical three days when a shy dog says 'HEY...I'M HERE'. What can I say except that Mariner is the most wonderful foster pup...chill, calm tail wags...what more can you want???
Today was love day. The day she said 'enough of this being scared thing...I need to be petted and told I'm beautiful' so she stands still for great loving and has started braving new spaces to get it. LOVE the BRAVE soul inside that says 'love over fear'.
Her house manners are perfect - aka 'oh, foster mom, did you leave the bag with treats on the hallway floor and go out?...that's OK, I only snack on things you give me and boy-o-boy..."I love to snack. I love my BREAKFAST and I love my snacks that we get when Luna comes inside and I love my DINNER and I really love it when we go out front of the house because brisket, turkey and cheese just seem to flow from the Foster Momma's hands.....I hear a car...treat, treat, treat...I see a person...wag, wag, wag.: Mariner can play these games all day long.
She's not so keen on going on walks...lots of scary stuff out there but..she loves having a backyard she can putter in.
Putter? She doesn't putter when she retrieves Retrievers. Nope...she's a master at retrieving RETRIEVERS...so I throw the ball or toy for Jake and Luna and she will go and retrieve them for me. She's very good at it. Every ball that goes down the yard has two dogs running down and two dogs running back...she's a master...retrieving BOTH labs in the house.
Now, I know that most of you don't want an easy to care for Lab, easy going and loving lab who just wags because you wave at her or because you're in the room but, I'm sure there's someone that things that a happy, easy going, loving though slightly timid dog is just perfect. If you're out there...Mariner's your girl. She's PERFECT!!!!

Update (9/12): Mariner is visiting with a new foster family for a couple of weeks. I'll confess, I've watched with with great interest because she is a shy girl and I love shy dogs. Well, she has settled in just beautifully and is only a little shy. She loves puttering in the backyard with the resident dogs and she and the most shy dog in the house are hitting it off like gang busters.
I have to say; she's an easy girl to love and welcome into your home. More to follow on her shortly but for now we say WELCOME Mariner!!!

update (7/31): Mariner here with an update. Foster momma said that when I got better, I would get a forever home - one with love, another dog, Doritos, a fenced yard and a little patience. Well I am better and I am ready for those promises to come true. I am 8 according to the "people" but I don't have very much gray and don't have any issues with mobility so foster momma isn't completely convinced! I don't bark, counter surf or get on the furniture and am completely trustworthy in the house. I am VERY quiet and while I love pets, I am still a little unsure about the wider world so walks aren't very long. I do like treats and am very food motivated so I have already learned sit and am working on stay. Did I mention I am very cute??

Update (7/30): Mariner is doing fabulous in her foster home. She really has come so far since she arrived to lab rescue! She is currently sleeping and wagging her tail! She is to the point where she is almost playful when people come home or get up. She's still uncertain out in the world on a leash but she is doing fantastic.

Update (6/11): Foster momma made me wear this silly hat to celebrate the fact that I am starting MY new year. I am now healthy and free of heartworms. I even played fetch tonight - well only once because I brought the ball back and she threw it again. Clearly she doesn't want the ball! I am still not ready to walk on a leash - the world is still a little scary but I am doing really well in the house and in the backyard so if you have a fenced yard, a friendly dog and a place in your heart for me - call your A/C! I am ready - just tell them that Mariner sent you!!

Update (5/27): Mariner is doing awesome! She is doing well post heartworm treatment (less than 2 weeks to go until she's off restriction! She wags her tail all of the time now – she's a happy girl. She even wags her tail when you look in her direction. She continues to get even more comfortable in her foster home and willingly accepts affection. She gives a big bark if someone rings the doorbell. She goes up to bed with her fosters when it is time to go to bed and no longer has to psych herself up to walk on the tile or hardwood. Stairs are no big thing. She loves her stuffed bone! You can see that she is thinking about playing when the resident dogs get rowdy but luckily she isn’t quite there. She is still quite content to lay on the floor next to her foster. She is really ready a forever family!

Update (5/8): I have been with my foster family for 7 weeks now and guess what I have now - a SMILE! I haven't had one of those in a long time. In these 7 weeks I have learned: that people hands are nice for petting, the food comes in bowls, the stairs aren't scary, it is ok to go outside because I will get to come back in when I ask and tile and hardwood won't make me wipe out if I don't try to walk on my toenails! I am a fan of treats and am very food motivated. I learned sit in just two days (I am still working on it but I know what I am supposed to do now!). I don't bark or get on the furniture (foster mom can't convince me to even try the dog beds), countersurf or beg (well does asking for Doritos count as begging??). I am still shy on a leash so I need a fenced yard and I can get lonely so I would like another low-key dog to keep me company. I am completely housetrained too! Foster mom says that I am 8 but I don't feel like it! I start my 30-days of laying low after my heart worm treatment next week but foster mom says that won't be an issue because that is my normal state! Call your AC today - so you can come fall in love too!

Update (5/1): Greetings from Miss Mariner. She is slowly coming out her shell and has a delightful personality now that she is safe. She has almost mastered sit (she wants you to know she is very food motivated!) and is really trying to please. New situations make her nervous so she would really appreciate a quiet family that has another dog she can chill with. She has become a champion at the stairs (a month ago she had never seen them!) and would really like a home with more carpet than not. She needs a fenced yard and a stuffed animal or two to snuggle with. She is completely housebroken, doesn't bark and doesn't countersurf (but she will share food with you if you leave it on the coffee table - doritos are yummy!). Are you looking for a quiet girl to share your life with? Mariner would love to meet you.

Update (4/27): Greetings from Mariner! She has been with her foster family for a month now and this little girl has totally blossomed! She arrived scared, confused and worried. She has learned to navigate stairs, tile, the hardwood floor and eating out of a bowl. She has figured out that hands are really nice things that give good pets. She won't ask for anything but is happy to have a treat or have her head rubbed now. She would still prefer a house with more carpet than not and she needs a fenced yard because walks are still pretty scary. She is still nervous in new situations so she would like a patient family that knows she has lots to love to give. Do you have room in your family and your heart for her?

Update (4/23): Mariner is really starting to come out of her shell. She is settling in and getting more comfortable as she adapts to her foster home. She is house trained. The tile floor isn’t so scary anymore – now when the pack goes out, she goes too without any issues. The hardwood floor still poses a challenge and she won’t come upstairs at night but she is getting there. She loves meal time and treats and will even come to you for one! She loves exploring the yard and seems to have a fairly high prey drive. Walks in the neighborhood are still scary for her but she is making progress. She will do best in a quiet home, with a fenced in yard and another mellow doggie companion to show her the ropes.
