My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

I have an Adoption Pending but hope you will consider one of our other great dogs. Thank you!

7/18/15 Update: Stella is a gorgeous 5 year-old who we believe is a Belgian Tervuren/Corgi/Golden Retriever mix. She was adopted from another rescue at age 1 and lived happily for four years with a loving family. Tearfully, they had to surrender her when one family member became ill. Since then, she has lived with a loving foster family in Westchester County. Cautious of strangers, Stella took several days to make the transition and bond with her foster family. Ever since, she has been an absolutely delightful and low-maintenance companion.

Stella does best with a human who is her alpha companion; loving, but clearly in charge so she can let down her protective tendencies and just be a dog. She is an absolutely wonderful dog who becomes extremely attached to her human - just watch her playing with her foster daddy in her video. She loves taking walks, jogs, and car rides, and will be by your side wherever you go. She is totally housebroken and never goes up on the furniture; Stella is 100% low-maintenance inside the house. She will do well in a home without young children and where she can be an only pet. If you are patient and loving – and if you are looking for a best friend who just likes to be near you, asks for very little, and alerts you when someone is at the door - Stella is waiting for you!

6/25/15 Update: Stella is a vacation animal! I decided to take a spontaneous three day jaunt to Cape Cod and to take Stella to practice what I’d learned from Eddie, the dog-whisperer, at what I remembered to be the dog-friendliest place on earth. Stella was a wonderful companion and the trip was great for both of us. First of all, she truly loves riding in the car. A five hour drive was sheer pleasure for her; she hopped in and out readily, loved the brief stops along the way, and otherwise sat quietly in the back, staring out the window or sleeping; We stayed in North Truro at a dog-friendly hotel which seems to cater to people with rescues. Stella loved the wide open spaces, as we roamed the grounds, passed other dogs without incident and enjoyed the panoramas of the bay and Provincetown Harbor. She even did exceptionally well in the crowded streets of Provincetown. She stayed in a heel position as we walked past an endless stream of other dogs, without incident or nervous energy. She even liked the beach, where she sat by my side and walked along the water happily; she did not particularly like going into the water but did dig in the sand! Back at the hotel, Stella loved to sit on the balcony and “protect” her kingdom. :-)

I learned a lot about her through this journey into new territory. Stella does very well in open, but protected space; a farm or large fenced-in yard will be perfect for her. She will not run away; she consistently stayed when I put her in stay position, and comes when called. When we were in a fenced in dog run, she stayed at my side, after snooping around in the corners. She is a really low-maintenance pet indoors; no accidents, adjusts to new situations and really relies on her owner. Stella is a great guard dog, alerting us to any strangers nearby. Once she is comfortable, she relaxes and is the sweet, loyal, and easy-going Stella we have come to know and love.

Stella's Story: Stella is a 4-5 year-old Golden/Corgi mix who was tearfully surrendered by her former family due to a serious health situation in the family. She had been adopted 4 years prior and had been a beloved companion who enjoyed hiking and jogging with the family, playing fetch with their son, and chasing squirrels. Her former family shared, “She would be a great fit for someone who wants a companion because she is that quintessential loyal dog who follows you everywhere and provides lots and lots of love to her humans. Stella is amazing and we only ask that you consider adopting her if you are going to love her and treat her well.”

As Stella has settled into her foster home, her foster family has found her a true joy to share life with. “She is quiet in the house and loves being with her people. Stella LOVES her walks as well as car rides. Stella is simply a pleasure in so many ways. In the house, she is a low maintenance, easygoing companion. She now welcomes and seeks affection, gives affection, and has a sweet and loving disposition. She continues to be reliably housebroken, never gets on furniture, and just loves following us around the house wherever we are. We can leave her anywhere in the house when we need to go out, and are greeted with nothing different except lots of hugs and kisses when we return. Stella loves walks and rides in the car, and with help of a harness she heels wonderfully. She has a GORGEOUS coat and loves to be brushed.”

When Stella first arrived at her loving foster home in Westchester County, NY, she exhibited several quirky behaviors. Working with renowned dog trainer, Eddie Simon, of Danbury, CT, has made an enormous difference for her. Her foster dad shared: Eddie had a real impact on Stella and me. Little nuanced changes are turning her into a sweet and loving and more relaxed dog. She will be fabulous. We have learned that Stella needs to be in a home where she is the only pet since she gets upset with other animals at times. We just know there is someone out there who will appreciate that she is a great dog, just the right energy level, loves her walks and car rides and mostly wants to keep someone company. Tonight we took a different kind of walk; one where she heels the whole way until I let her know it is OK to sniff and poke around and do her business. She started to get excited when she saw a squirrel, one tug on her leash and she was back at the heel. When someone came to the front door, she became overexcited as usual. I stepped in front if her, stuck my butt in her space, and after a few tries she sat down. She has learned she doesn't have to worry about guarding or protecting because she doesn’t have to be the pack leader. It has made such a difference in her well-being. It's a beautiful thing to see her relax!

Stella is an intelligent, loving, loyal, and beautiful dog who needed a little training help. She is a great dog who hasn’t reached her full potential yet, and our trainer Eddie will continue to work with her in her adoptive home if needed — she has already come such a long way. A quiet home, with kind, patient, and soft-spoken humans (who are home more often than not) would be Stella’s ideal home. Older children would be OK as she loved the company of her human brother. Stella would relish a home where she can be spoiled, kissed and loved. Stella is up-to-date on vaccinations, heartworm negative, and spayed.

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

SGRR Adoption Fees (subject to change)**
Puppies under 6 months $650
Young dogs 6 months - 6 years $550
Young dogs - Special Needs $450
Senior dogs 7 - 9 years $450
Seniors dogs 10 years and older $350
Senior dogs - Special Needs $300
Young Bonded Pairs $850
Senior Bonded Pairs $750

**Please note: The fees listed represent a slight increase and are effective for applications received after June 1 2014. We regret the need to increase the fees for our dogs, but found it necessary due to the increased costs we are faced with for each dog's care and placement.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.

Please be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog and make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
