My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Age: 5 years
Gender: Male
Color: Liver & White
Weight: 50 lbs
Variety: Bench

From Chance's foster family: Chance’s previous owner, who had adopted him at birth and was his constant companion, surrendered this handsome boy to ESRA to find him a new Forever Home.

Because of these circumstances, Chance has had some anxiety adjusting to his foster home. Initially he would bark if we even left him alone in the room. But after a week he became more comfortable and confident in his new surroundings, and he no longer does this. From time to time we do need to leave him home alone, so we use a Thundershirt, which helps calm him. He is not destructive in any way; he just barks to communicate his displeasure at not being near his people.

Like many Springers, Chance is a loyal companion who will follow us from room to room, and he loves to cuddle on the couch or bed if we let him. He is housetrained and can be trusted to have the run of the house while we are away. He sleeps on the floor in our bedroom and does not make any kind of fuss or noise at night. He would join us in bed if he were allowed to, although we do not allow him to do this. Upon waking in the morning, he goes directly to the door and outside to do his business. We are able to let him out unrestrained as he recalls well and does not wander.

Chance is an excellent watchdog, barking to alert us if someone is in the yard or at the door, but he quiets down quickly when told to do so. He does fine when meeting new people or dogs, greeting them quickly, initially with a bark, but also with a wagging tail. Chance rides well in a car or truck but does show excitement as we reach our destination. He walks fairly well on a leash, pulling a little until he knows the limits of the leash. Off leash, Chance is a champ. He likes to run ahead to explore, but he is never out of sight and frequently returns to check in. Chance shows some Springer energy but settles quickly and actually enjoys napping as well.

Chance has obviously been well cared for and is in very good shape. His previous owner reports that in addition to being constant companions, they enjoyed hunting pheasants together. This is probably why Chance is partial to men, although in the short time he has been in our home, his affections have expanded to others as well. We do not know how Chance is around small children, but his previous owner says he loves people no matter what size. He gets along with the resident dogs and shows no aggression toward them. Chance is not particularly fond of cats. He will bark and chase them if given the opportunity.

With the improvement he has already shown, we believe that with a little work Chance will be able to overcome his anxiety at being left alone. However, his perfect Forever Home would be a home where someone is home with him most of the day. Chance is looking for a new constant companion; he says, “Please take a chance on me!”

Please note that an approved adoption application is the first step in a more thorough interview process that is designed to match each dog to exactly the right family, and that the final decision rests with the dog's case manager.
Please read the Adoption FAQ and get an Adoption Application approved before inquiring about Chance.
