WHY IS THIS DOG IN NEED??- This Girl was picked up as a stray. She is in a high kill shelter that is faced to make hard choices for nothing more than having no space.

WHERE IS THIS DOG NOW ?- She will be arriving June 20th. She will need foster care to settle and so we can learn about what her needs are.

**ALL ABOUT RUBY **

Info from shelter :
Very sweet girl.
Pound info - 8 month old,
female Lab/Border Collie mix. Young.
Very playful and energetic.

Update from foster mom :

Her needs :
- a fenced yard
-a buddy to play with and burn off her energy would be great!
-active family who can meet her needs
-home only with teens/ adults- d/t her high herding genetics and uncertainty of younger children at times.

Just to give some more info on Ruby in the mean time because I feel she needs a certain type of home to be successful...
I've had Ruby here for just over a week now to get to know her and here is what I've discovered:
-She loves other dogs! She'd play all day if any of my dogs were able to keep up with her!
-She loves toys...no favorites really...just TOYS!! Balls, stuffed animals, frisbees, nylabones, water bottles, etc...
-She would prefer a fenced in yard to RUN!! And boy can she run!
-She likes fetch but needs work on learning how to bring it back
-She's super sweet and loves to cuddle
-I think she'd be great at agility
-She's EXCELLENT in a crate :-) She sleeps all night with no issues and due to her complete lack of training she spends time in it during the day when I am busy doing other things.
-She is house trained!

Things she needs to work on:
-it seems Ruby has had no real training in her 8 months....she doesn't respond to any of the usual commands that most puppies learn...i.e. sit...however we are working on it and she is learning fast.

-I suspect that whoever had her before us did a lot of rough housing with her. She is VERY nippy still. She doesn't nip hard but she thinks this is an appropriate way to play and she needs an owner who is calm and patient for her to understand it is not the right way to play. When I sit with her at night she wants to nibble my hands but if I'm calm and correct the nipping then she will calm down and lay her head in to me for love and belly rubs :-) But it does take some work to get her to that point.
-when we're out in the yard her instinct tells her that she needs to nip my ankles to get me to play with her. Again, she doesn't nip really hard but she thinks this is the right way to play. I correct this and then throw toys and play that way to show her the right way to play. Even after a week this is starting to sink in but obviously is going to need more work, especially when transitioning into a new home.

-she does have some food possession issues that we are working on. They seem to be linked with her crate but I haven't sufficiently tested her to say for sure. I discovered this when I gave her a treat in her crate and then reached in to pet her and tell her good girl...she nipped at my hand harder than usual but I kept it there and told her "no", then she grabbed my hand and left an indent...I've been doing this long enough that I have no fear so I reached in and removed the treat...but had I of backed away in fear it would have fed in to the problem.
When I tested her out of the crate she didn't have the same reaction but I haven't known about this problem long enough to say for sure (this just happened 2 days ago). I feed her in her crate and she will bark at the other dogs if they come up to the crate while she's eating too. Since I discovered this problem I have been making a habit of making myself present while she is eating. I sit beside her crate at breakfast and dinner and casually put my hand by her dish outside the crate. I can see her looking at it but there have been no other incidents of biting/growling since the first time. But this is a concern for me and I want to make sure her new home will continue working on this.

-lastly, Ruby is a herding breed. She may not be pure bred but she is A LOT of border collie! She needs things to keep her brain occupied. Filled kongs, treat balls, frozen treats in the summer, etc... She acts like a herding breed puppy....she's BUSY! She always wants to play. She chases things that run (i.e. my kids lol). She nips at ankles and runs behind you to "herd" you. She has learned a lot in her first week with us but still has a lot to learn. She is completely open to training and guidance and will make a LOVELY companion to the person who has the time and patience to put in the training she obviously missed in her first home.

We welcome your application for consideration .
