My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Lulu! She is a tri-coloured Beagle/Brittany Spaniel mix. She's a 2yr old medium sized dog, making her easy to handle and the perfect size for snuggling with. Lulu will make you smile daily with her joyful personality and character. She is a joy to live with and we know she will be a fantastic dog in her forever home.

Lulu came from a home where she was neglected before she was brought to the pound. At first she was very weak and skinny, but she's put on some weight (she's about 25 lbs now) and her energy levels are up. True to her Beagle side, she doesn't easily tire when exercised, but she's just as happy to lounge around and have a lazy day. Lulu is very trusting of people. She's not shy or timid around strangers. She will curl up to anyone and turn belly up for a good belly rub. When she gets attached to someone, she will follow them everywhere they go. Generally, she's a very quiet, laid back dog, but occasionally she will get a burst of energy and act goofy.

Lulu suffers from a type of skin allergy, making her very itchy all over. Because of this she has some hair loss, mostly on her legs and around her eyes. Her hair loss used to be much worse, she was half naked when she was dropped off at the pound, but it's growing back nicely. She’s still a little sparse around her eyes and legs but in time this will all grow back. She's receiving medication and special baths to relieve the itching. None of this seems to phase her though, she's great for bathing, car rides, even vet visits. Her new family will need to continue her on the meds and occasional medicated baths to help her through the spring and summer allergy season.

Lulu is house trained, but she won't ask to be let out, so she needs to be taken for walks or let out into a fenced-in yard regularly. She is not yet loving the crate, but we're working on it. She has no problem going into the crate, and will go in on her own free will, but because she was previously neglected, she hates to see her people leave. She will cry and whine in her crate for about 5 minutes, but we are working on this by coming and going quietly without making a fuss. Otherwise she's usually a pretty quiet dog, but she's not afraid to speak up if she sees other people and dogs having fun outside without her. She would not be a suitable apartment dog as she does fuss for a few minutes when her family leaves before settling. A detached home where no adjoined neighbours will be bothered is ideal for her. She's great around all the animals she's met, other dogs, horses, chickens, even a llama. She's cautious around very large animals like horses, and she likes to chase chickens, but is not aggressive.

Lulu walks very nicely, but Beagles get very distracted by scents, and if she picks up an interesting one, she'd rather follow her nose than follow you. After a couple of corrections she will stop pulling and go back to walking nicely. She prefers to be on a long leash so she has room to explore. Because she has Beagle in her she cannot be trusted off leash outside of a fenced in area. Lulu would like to be taken on a good walk or two every day. The longer the better! She loves to sniff and explore new areas and her little legs can take her far. She is a great walking companion and she’s great in the car as well so excursions to new places are fun for her. She is a great travel companion.

Lulu is very food motivated, she will instantly sit if she thinks there's a tasty treat for her, but she has a short attention span, so needs a lot of repetition and practice to teach her new skills. She will need to attend obedience school with her new family and it should be a facility that uses positive methods and uses food rewards and praise in training. She will love the social aspect of dog school and will also love the one on one attention from her family she will receive at school. At first she didn't show much interest in toys, but she's slowly catching on. She likes to use her mouth while playing, gently biting, but not causing harm, so we're trying to teach her that it's better to bite toys rather than hands. She loves to fetch and play tug of war, but she's easily excited and can get a bit too rough when she's wound up. She also likes to jump up, which is something we're working on teaching her not to do, but even when she jumps up, she's very gentle. Lulu exhibits a lot of athletic ability when she makes heroic leaps onto furniture. If you're interested in agility training, then this is definitely the dog for you! Because she is still working on playing gently we feel a home with kids over 10yrs of age would be best for her if kids are to be in the home.

Meal times area work in progress. She is gentle when hand fed, and does not guard her food, but she does not like to be touched while eating and will become upset if provoked. We are working with a trainer on ways to desensitize her to this. In her previous home food was a rarity and she wasn’t fed regularly so now when she gets food she wants to eat it right away without being bothered. She is fed twice a day in her foster home but a dog that has been starved takes a while to get over the fear of going hungry again. We are sensitive to Lulu’s past and are working on showing her that being handled while eating is ok and her dish will not be taken away.

Lulu's good nature, sweetness, and ability to get along with humans, canines, and other animals alike makes her an excellent candidate for adoption into a house with other animals. She has this sad, sweet look in her eyes that makes it hard to say no to her. She would thrive with owners that are firm and consistent with her to help her in her training and adapting to a loving home. She would do well in a home with lots of room to run, or with owners that are committed to regularly exercising her because she behaves better with regular exercise as all young and active dogs do. Lulu had a rough start in life, and deserves a patient, understanding and loving family that will cherish her for the cute ball of fluff that she is. With love and caring, Lulu will be a great companion.

All Pound Dog Rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested, de-wormed (if required), and micro-chipped prior to adoption.
