My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Cooper: 11 year old neutered male yellow Lab, ~ 80 pounds

My name is Cooper, and I can tell you, YOU want ME! I am a handsome boy, still in my prime even at 11 years old. Let me tell you my story:

My family adopted me when I was about 8 weeks old. I lived with a chiweenie, and even though he was an itty bitty thing, he was alpha and I let him do anything he wanted to me. I lived with kids, and there was even a cat around. I didn’t bother with the cat, unless he went outside on our fence. Then I might chase him, but only for a minute because I knew it was a waste of time! I am just a mellow kind of guy, and love being with my humans. My humans spent a lot of time with me when I was growing up, and I know lots of tricks: Sit, Stay, Down, Heel, Come, and my favorite one where my mom puts a cookie on my nose, and when she tells me, I flip it in the air and catch it! I am also a talented counter surfer, a trick my mom does not really appreciate!

Unfortunately my mom has lost her home, and can’t keep me. It’s so sad; the house has no furniture in it, and I just wander through looking for everything and everyone. My mom has introduced me to a new human who will be taking care of me until I find my forever home. I hope that is soon! My new human is wonderful, but I really miss my family, and would like to be in my forever home. Come meet me, you will love me!

What Cooper’s Rescue Rep says:

Cooper is a wonderful dog! He walks nicely in a leash on a choke chain (pulls a bit for a few minutes until he settles down, but then he is super easy to walk). He’s not big on toys, but did enjoy a tug toy, and gave it up easily when asked to Leave it. He’s been around dogs large and small, and also kids of all ages. He rides well in the car and can be safely left alone in the house for a few hours. He is accustomed to being able to go outside when needed, as his owner would leave the door open for him.

Cooper is a healthy dog for his age. He has a little bit of stiffness in his back legs which might benefit from joint supplements. (His hindquarters are a little weak, and he needs help getting his back end into the car.) He still runs and bounces and has good energy. He goes on walks of 30 to 45 minutes and does just fine! He does have grain allergies, so he needs to be on a grain free diet (currently he’s on Salmon and Sweet Potato from Costco). He is a lover and will happily roll over for a belly rub.

Cooper would be great in just about any home, but we think given his age he would be best served in a home with somewhat older kids, 8+, who know they shouldn’t jump on him. Also, like many Labs he is very food oriented, and he isn’t always as gentle about taking treats; we wouldn’t want little ones getting their fingers inadvertently made part of the treat! It would be great if someone was home much of the time; he’s accustomed to having a work at home parent. Since he’s been with his original family his entire life, we think he may be a little needy as he settles in to his new home, and having someone with him will help speed that process.

Cooper is neutered, current on vaccinations, heartworm free and on preventive, and micro-chipped. Cooper is located in San Jose.

If you are interested in making Cooper a part of your family, call Rescue Rep Debbi 408-613-2044.

(Please keep in mind we are all volunteers, most of us work full time and we all have personal lives. I do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient and I will be back in touch with you. When the dogs are in foster homes then it may take longer as we need to touch base with the fosters for updates on the dogs. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week and we do not have a facility that we keep the dogs housed in. They are scattered all over the Bay Area.)
