My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

JUNIOR: 3 Year Old Male Neutered Black Lab 70 Pounds

Junior was surrendered by his owners to the Ukiah shelter and the rescue coordinator contacted Lab Rescue as he was not doing well in the shelter and was due to be put down. Lab Rescue evaluated him and told the coordinator that we could take him into our program.

We currently have Junior in a foster to train program with one of the lead trainers from guide dogs and he is doing great with him. Junior has a couple of quirks so we asked the shelter if we could call the owners to see if we could find out more about his back ground.

This is what we found out from the owner:

Junior’s dad is a yellow lab and his mom is a chocolate lab. The owners were breeding dogs but then got all of them fixed. Junior should have not survived his birth but he was the last one out and they owners revived him. They decided to keep him as he was the cutest lab of the litter and had the best personality. Junior has been an inside dog, housebroken, crate trained, knows sit, down, shake, come, loves to swim and with the help if the trainer he walks well on a leash. Junior was in a home with cats and chickens and he got along with all of them. You can take Junior’s food bowl away from him with no issues and his previous owner had to take a chicken out of his mouth once and Junior allowed her. Junior was in a home with 3 kids and they ranged in age from 7-14 with no issues, he would jump up for night snuggles before he went into his crate. The owners use to take Junior to the beach where he loved to swim and play fetch but then he started to have anxiety in the car, so they stopped taking him for car rides. Their friends would come to the house with their dogs and Junior got along with everyone. The family decided they had to take Junior to the shelter as the family worked during the day, the mom would come home and call the dogs and they would come running to her. Junior and his dad would push each other around for the attention of the mom and during one of these times Junior bit the dog on the ear. The family did not do anything to help set the dogs up for success in this situation, they would just let them compete for attention. (They did seem upset that they took Junior to the shelter.)

The current foster /trainer is taking Junior for car rides to help him get over his anxiety. He is leading him on walks and he is working with Junior on positive training methods. The foster has several dogs in and out of the home and he has two small dogs of his own and Junior has been fine with them all. Junior is very healthy and has not had any health issues during his 3 years. He is current on his shots, microchipped, heartworm negative and neutered.

We would like Junior to go to a home that will continue his current path of two walks a day and the path of leading him. He would be fine in a home with cats and children.

He is located in Petaluma.

(Please keep in mind we are all volunteers, most of us work full time and we all have personal lives. I do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient and I will be back in touch with you. When the dogs are in foster homes then it may take longer as we need to touch base with the fosters for updates on the dogs. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week and we do not have a facility that we keep the dogs housed in. They are scattered all over the Bay Area.)
