My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

DELLA: 3 Year Old Yellow Female Spayed Lab 70 Pounds

Della has had a lot of shuffling around in her short life.

Here is Della’s story:

Della had an original owner, a family with twins babies bought two puppies. They could not handle two puppies so they gave Della to their friend. The friend did not really want a dog so Della got left in the backyard. She got little attention and exercise. They put Della up on craigslist for sale and she was purchased for a gift for their father who lives on the same property of the current owner. (Della was 98 pounds when she was purchased off craigslist.) The father became very ill and passed away in September of 2014. Della then went back and forth between the two homes but really wanted to be with the current owner as Della’s best friend was her Husky. The current owner, the daughter, needed to find Della a new home as her mom has a small dog that is not nice to other dogs and Della decided she had enough and went after the small dog. Della did not hurt the small dog but the owner felt since they work it was not fair to either dog.

What the owner has to say about Della:

Della has been around lots of other dog and people. We take her to the dog park, she runs around our property, 6 acres, with other dogs, she loves attention from people and loves to play with other dogs. Della knows: sit, stay, down, leave it, come and no. Della is housebroken, loves to be around kids, gets daily exercise, should not be in a home with cats, loves to ride in cars, loves to swim, great on leash around people and other dogs, does not have separation anxiety, sleeps on her dogs bed at night and does not bark or whine when left alone.

We took Della into our program and we currently have her in a foster home that is a dog trainer.

This is what the foster/trainer has to say about Della:

Della loves to play with other dogs but she can get excited. When she wants to run over when she gets excited she now sits at the trainer’s feet to calm herself before she continues to play with the other dogs! She is a very social dog and loves to play with other dogs but is learning to wait calmly when the energy gets too high. She loves training and engagement and is a very smart dog. She enjoys being with her pack and her recall is pretty awesome. She also loves running and swimming. She calms down easily in the home when she has had enough exercise during the day and is quiet.

What we want for Della:

A home that has had experience with large dogs and a home that has been through training. Della can be in a home with other dogs but the dogs need to be larger dogs and a dogs that are older – over 6. She will need at least 2-3 hours of exercise a day. The ideal family will be very active and want a dog to do something with, she wants to be included and has a lot of energy. We will do a hand off session with the trainer and we will ask the adopter to follow up and pay for at least 2 more training sessions with the foster / trainer.

Della is very healthy – she has not had any health issues. She is spayed, heartworm negative, microchipped, has all her shots and is spayed.

She is located in Santa Berkeley.

(Please keep in mind we are all volunteers, most of us work full time and we all have personal lives. I do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient and I will be back in touch with you. When the dogs are in foster homes then it may take longer as we need to touch base with the fosters for updates on the dogs. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week and we do not have a facility that we keep the dogs housed in. They are scattered all over the Bay Area.)
