Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Derek is between 2 & 5 yrs old. He was left on the side of the road near woods in New Jersey. No one was able to catch him for 9 days. He kept returning to the same spot where he was left waiting for those people to come back for him. Any time anyone tried to go near him he would take off into the woods only to return to that spot. On the 9th day he finally gave in to the food being offered & was caught. He was then transferred to A Tail to Tell & after seeing a vet he was sent to my home. I've had him for about 5 months now. When we first got him he would hide under the bed & if you tried to reach under there to get him he would bite you. After about a week he would come out on his own when it was time to go to the bathroom, leave for work, etc. He has always slept under the bed up until 2 weeks ago. In the middle of the night he now gets up & goes to sleep on one of the dog beds. He could sleep anywhere in the house he wanted.
Derek does have some issues & it will take a special person willing to work with him (which I am not expecting to happen right away) Derek has bit my daughter, my boyfriend & the groomers. He would have bitten me as well but with my job I'm pretty quick & know the signs all to well. He hates to be groomed & does need to be muzzled for it. I would not let him go to a home with cats because he has tried to go after mine. He also should not go to a home with children. However he is wonderful with other dogs. He gets along great with mine, even our newest foster who is blind & constantly running into him. He has been in daycare too & did great.
Derek is really a good dog. He is completely house trained & so easy to care for. He loves to go on walks, destroy toys & play fetch with tennis balls He doesn't bark much at all, even when my chihuahua is going crazy he doesn't join in. He's very sweet but not big on cuddling. He just prefers to be near me. Unfortunately, I do think he will probably bite again. I want him to find a wonderful home but I do not want him to go to a home without the potential adopters to be completely aware of his behavior. If / when he goes I do not want him to come back. I only want him to go if he is going to a great place where there is no chance he will be returned.
So that is his story with us so far. We know nothing of his past or what he went through other than the 9 days in the woods.
