My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

When we are asked about a special rescue dog that is snuggly, sweet and very fun-loving, we can't help but think of Gabriel. His smile is shining...and maybe just a bit mischievous. This curious and really, really smart 5 - 6 year old (such a perfect age for the very long-living Maltese..old enough to have left puppyish behavior behind and young enough to have many, many active years left) is a dream come true pet for an adult couple or retirees. This beautiful 10 lb Maltese (may be a mix but we don't really see another breed that we can identify) is a truly great companion as well as a lap dog extraordinaire. There aren't many visible signs (other than his initial shyness upon meeting new people) that Gabriel was in a very scary situation...he and 7 others were the pets of a woman who meant well but found the world too difficult a place - she ended her life and left 8 dogs homeless. They were transferred to a high-kill rural OK shelter about to face euthanasia. Upon hearing of the plight of these beautiful dogs, our compassionate Oklahoma rescuers put their story out to the rescue community. Farfel's made the decision to help 6 of the 8 dogs (the other 2 were already adopted)...they're sweet, adorable and deserving of great lives!

Gabriel's OK foster had the following to say about this very kind guy:

Gabriel is a 5 - 6 year old Maltese who came to us with 7 other dogs because they are in desperate need of new homes - such a sad situation. This gorgeous boy is actually settling in very nicely and although he is still a bit unsure, he so desperately wants to be held and touched as a sign that everything is going to be alright! Gabriel is well rounded and is quite agreeable with people, dogs and cats alike. He is a sweetie-pie and very clean about himself.

We picture Gabriel as the best friend to retirees. He'd be so loyal.. and overjoyed to share his love and good will. There's also no question that Gabriel would be the most popular guy on the block. Once comfortable, he loves to engage and just be his entertaining, adorable self. Even though Gabriel is usually up for pretty much any activity, he's not pushy or yappy. Exercise..perhaps a walk in the sunshine to socialize with neighbors, and mental stimulation that comes from his time with his humans.. is important to this guy to keep him happy and well-behaved. it's not that he requires extensive amounts, just enough to keep him healthy and stimulated.

Gabriel is such an easy guy to bring along. You can just scoop him up and he'll lie happily in your arms. Or grab a backpack for a hike...if the path is too long, Gabriel will snuggle down to enjoy the hike with a great view from above.

Gabriel derives so much joy from his relationships, we would love to see him in a family that often stays at home..or chooses to bring along a sweet and kind fuzzy family member. Gabriel would shine in an office setting or in pretty much any situation where a sweet pup is accepted. Gabriel is a great dog who deserves this love and consistency in his life

Gabriel's pre-transport foster had the following to say about lovebug Gabriel:

Sweet and kind Gabriel would be perfect for a retired couple or individual. He is a little timid at first but once I sat quietly with him, spoke gently about how much I loved him and gave him tons of belly rubs..he couldn't stop wagging his tail...it was as if he was reborn! All Gabriel wants to make him happy is to sit or lie by my side (or on my lap) and follow me as I wander around the house (although, he does get tired of my wanderings and will lie down quietly in an available dog bed or couch). Gabriel is working on his leash skills and is learning like a champ. He only likes to potty outside - he needs to be shown where his spot is and not have his need to go outside ignored. Gabriel is so respectful of my home and me that he would never consider being destructiive in my house. Gabe sleeps on his bed (or my bed occasionally) all night with no problems whatsoever. He's very careful to be quiet and never snores! Gabe is such a sweet and kind boy! He just needs some love and attention. When he understands that he's well-loved and respected, his self-esteem will skyrocket and there won't be a better companion in the world! I just love him!

This adorable and very loyal Maltese is a non-shedding guy. This breed combination is also considered to be the most hypoallergenic available for those with allergy concerns. Gabriel will therefore require periodic grooming and great nutrition to keep his stunning white coat cottony-soft, shining and matt-free.

Gabriel is being fostered in Denver and is available for a Meet and Greet.
