My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Why Choose me?

Update 7/31: Thanks to donations to the Athenspets Spay/Neuter Fund, Shade has been neutered and is up to date on his vaccinations!

Update 7/27: Shade tested negative for heartworms!

Update 7/21: Today, I watched as Shade and Cocoa were introduced by the administrator and an officer. They did so well they were allowed to play. They had a blast playing together–running, playing, licking each other, and sharing water. It was so much fun watching them play and have a great time! While Shade does not do well with other male dogs, he loves females and certainly enjoyed playing with Cocoa today.

Update 7/19: Shade now has a favorite toy and is always excited to play with it. It’s a stuffed duck that we play fetch with. At first Shade wanted to keep the toy and not give it back, but now he’ll trade it for a treat. He’ll even drop the toy at my feet waiting for his reward. When Shade was ready to stop the game, he took the duck and hid it behind the trash can. I felt like he was wanting to save it for another day. He sat beside me and put his head against me enjoying pets and attention. I know Shade can bark when he walks by other kennels; he gets wound up when other dogs bark at him. He’s also strong and pulls on the leash, but once he’s with you in an interaction pen, he’s sweet, fun, and affectionate. If you need help taking Shade out, ask one of the workers at Animal Control to assist you. I’ve also found that giving Shade a stuffed toy before walking by the kennels helps. He’s so happy prancing with his toy that he ignores the other dogs. When I return Shade to his kennel, I trade a treat for the toy since it’s not a good idea to leave toys in the kennels.

7/9: When I first met Shade, he greeted me with a hug. He was thrilled when I hugged him back and gave him some attention. I couldn’t get Shade to play with toys today, but he did like playing with Cole at the fence. They were both friendly and had a good time. Afterwards, Shade was ready to cool off. He wasn’t interested in trying out the swimming pool, but he did find the shade under my umbrella, and that’s where he spent the rest of our time together. He loves treats and showed me that he knows how to sit for them. Shade is a sweet, happy boy. He enjoys being with you and always has a smile or a hug to share.
