** #4 UPDATE FROM FOSTER MOM **
Ava is doing very well and now has her basic commands. She is great with the kitty and no longer pounces on the cat in excitement. I found the 2 of them asleep side by side the other night. She does have a prey drive but I think this has been mistaken for excitement due to lack of stimulation and socialization. Same with small kids, last night she spent half an hour with a barely walking child about 13 months old and was absolutely wonderful with her. Ava was very very gentle with this child off leash. She gets this look in her eyes when she around small children that she is just so calm and happy around children. This occurred at the dog park and the people who have seen ava s progress said they were amazed at how amazing she is with little kids. She has never knocked any child over, she is very careful with kids. I have had her around lots of kids highly supervised without any issues at all.

She is eating more food 2 cups in the am and 2 at night and is not gaining weight. She has a more adult dog build now. I am going to include a few pics that can be added to her ad on petfinder. In some of these she is showing off her new skills such as sit stay down. She also knows no, off, come, leave it, go pee, go poop, want a cookie (dog treat), shake a paw(although not consistent yet) and bed time.

She loves to run! Has no issues at the dog park with any dogs or people, has spent time with Peter cuddling with him on his bed (86year old disabled man) completely charmed him! Although he has loved all the dogs I've had over to see him. She was not afraid of any of his equipment and laid down for me and cuddled into him. She now let's anyone pet her and goes to the people she knows for pets and meets people without tackling them. She is absolutely lovely. She still requires varied exercise and has high socialization needs but as long as her needs are being met she is wonderful!

** UPDATE #2- #3
- UPDATE -over the last couple weeks of transitioning and training she is now doing great with the resident cat. That being said any new transitioning to a new home with new/ strange pets- she will need strict supervision , guidance and boundaries to know what is expected and ensure safety/ respect.

UPDATE from her FOSTER MOM:
She is really doing well, the key is varied exercise, socialization and consistency. She is fantastic with little puppies and kids at the dog park but on walks she tries to launch herself at people. Because she knows the off command, I am extending that to meeting people on walks. I am confident she will learn. She is a smart girl.

After the first few days I came up with a formula that has helped ava settle and she is well on her way to becoming a calm sweetheart. I got a collar on her that stops her from pulling which has allowed me to take advantage of her love of water! And with all the stimulation, she is able to sit calmly with me and watch. This is the result of not letting her control her environment by giving her direction, and getting her exercised properly with varied activities. Labs love people, so she gets socialized every night with both people and dogs at the dog park and is an absolute favourite among all the little puppies. I wish you could see how gentle she is with them! I have trained everyone on the "off" command, so she no longer jumps up on anyone even kids at the dog park. At my house, she is still learning with people who stop by but it will come. Everyone comments on how much more calm and happy she is.

I found that mental exercises have also helped, I have 2 dog food board games that she loves to play each afternoon before supper. She has to figure out how to get food out of these games. I ignored or corrected excited behaviour and rewarded calm behaviour and this is paying off hugely although was very challenging. She excelled at a dog lure course at dog lovers days and created quite the buzz and got a big crowd cheering her on! I'm going to try to attach a pic and video for you. But just wanted you to know that she is doing very well.

More to come as we learn / confirm this dogs needs.

** SHE'S ARRIVED **
UPDATE #1
Ava has arrived. She is settling into foster care so we can learn about her needs. She is very sweet but has also clearly been failed by her past owners on many levels.
She is head shy - indicating she has been hit.
She has missed out on the basics of training, leash respect, proper manners for meeting people.
She is very strong on leash but is improving with the direction she is receiving. She loves people and becomes over excited and will jump/ pull in her reactions.
She is very high energy!!.. and must have someone who is active and prepared to give her outlets for this.
She is a very smart girl and seems to get bored fast... and so must have mental stimulation/ games/ play to challenge her mind, work on training commands- follow thru.

She has prey drive- though lives with a cat- her interactions at this time of having just arrived are too high for safe interaction. She would be best in a home with no cats/ small animals.

We welcome your application for consideration .
