Sometimes it's love at first sight. That was certainly the case for Little Miss Sunshine and Boots, who acted like long lost lovers from the moment they first saw each other, and have been inseparable ever since. They first laid eyes on each other when Little Miss Sunshine arrived at Boots' foster home for assessment after being rescued from a colony. Little Miss Sunshine was in a recovery cage and Boots came in the room to investigate. As soon as they saw each other Boots came right up to Sunshine's cage and she pressed her face into his. Her foster mom let Sunshine out of her recovery cage, and she ran to Boots for a head-butt, and never looked back. Today they do absolutely everything together - even walking side by side and leaning against each other when they walk to another room looking for their foster parents or their next meal.

This adorable twosome isn't just affectionate with each other - they love their foster parents too. Little Miss Sunshine loves being pet and sitting on your lap, and has an unrivaled 'elevator butt'! Boots adores being brushed and can spend hours purring and circling your legs and flopping against your feet for attention. Neither are big fans of being picked up and held, but they make up for it with the incredible amount of attention they will give you 'at ground level'. Since they both spent at least a few years fending for themselves on the streets, they are jumpy around new people, loud noises, and sudden unexpected movements, so they should go to a fairly quiet home without children. But once you've won their hearts (which is pretty easy with food and treats!), this cuddly duo will never leave you alone.

They are both in great health, but Boots is FIV positive - a legacy of spending almost his entire life living on the streets. He adores indoor life, with its constant supply of attention, food, and toys, but endearingly still hasn't figured out how to drink out of a water bowl, after so many years of having to dip his paw into puddles to get water! Both Little Miss Sunshine and Boots love other cats - especially Boots, who is built like a tank, but has the heart of a teddy bear and the mew of a kitten. Little Miss Sunshine and Boots are a heartwarming and wonderful pair of cats, and watching them together is guaranteed to bring a smile on even the darkest day. Don't believe us? About Annex Cat Rescue

About Our Rescue Group...

Cat Adoption with a Difference

The Annex Cat Rescue began as a group of volunteers living primarily in the Annex neighbourhood in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. We now have members from all over the city. We share a common bond -- a love of cats and concern for their welfare. We are a non-profit organization and have no government funding.

It is our goal to eliminate cruelty to animals by providing for the fostering and adoption of cats that are homeless, abandoned, or where their owners (through illness, age, or death) can no longer care for them. We try to educate members of our community regarding the proper care of cats and to provide information aimed at reducing the feral, homeless, and abandoned populations. Throughout the year, we assist in the feeding of many feral cat colonies and operate a trap-neuter/spay-return (TNR) program.

Please lend your support to our cause by adopting one of our wonderful cats or by contributing a small donation!

The success of Annex Cat Rescue depends on the dedication of our volunteers -- not just the foster homes and trappers who work hands-on, but also those who support ACR's rescue work behind-the-scenes. If you, or anyone you know, is interested in becoming a volunteer, or expanding your work within the organization, please apply online.

Please see our website for some ways you can help. Our experienced volunteers are always there to support you, and even a few hours of your time every month can make a big difference.

Donate money! The Annex Cat Rescue is a registered Canadian charity and thus is able to issue tax receipts for donations over $10.00.

Come Meet Our Pets...

The Annex Cat Rescue is a grassroots community organization. We are 100% non-paid volunteer-run. Our organization attempts to make a real difference for the homeless, stray and abandoned cats in this city through direct intervention and education. Every day, many people turn to us for help when Toronto Animal Services cannot.

ACR does *not* run an animal shelter. All of our cats/kittens live in volunteer foster homes across Toronto where they are allowed to blossom and grow in a "home" environment (rather than in cages), and where they receive individual attention and love.

While this prevents possible behavioural problems associated with caging animals, this also allows us to get to know each animal intimately and thus we can make excellent matches with adopters. Potential adopters are required to make appointments to view the animals in their respective homes.

Our organization is "no kill". This means that cats in our care remain in foster homes are not euthanized (except for dire humane reasons). City shelters do not have such a policy.

Our Adoption Process...

If you are thinking of adopting a cat or kitten, please contact us. Annex Cat Rescue has matched over 1000 cats and kittens with good adoptive homes since our group started!

Annex Cat Rescue cats live in real homes with our foster volunteers -- not in cages! This way, the cats live in normal homes and receive good food and medical care -- and lots of personal attention. We get to know each cat, so we can help you find the best cat for you. It's kind of like a kitty match-making service!

All of our cats are vaccinated, have been de-wormed, and are spayed or neutered once they reach six months of age.

We are always available if you have questions or concerns as your new cat is adjusting to your home.

Here is our adoption process:

  • Please leave a voice mail or email.

  • One of our Adoption Team volunteers will contact you to find out more about the kind of kitty you are looking for. We will suggest which of our cats might be the best match for you, and put you in touch with a few foster homes for you to contact.

  • You can go and visit the cat in the foster home and see if you think it's a match.

  • If you fall in love on the spot (so easy with kitties!) we ask you to go home and think about it overnight, since it's an important decision for you and for the kitty.

  • Then, if it's a match, you can bring your cat carrier (and the adoption fee -- which is modest and does not cover all of our expenses) then take your kitty home! We ask all adopters to sign our adoption agreement, which just sets out some basics so we all understand our roles, with the kitty's best interests first and foremost!

  • A day or two later, we'll call you to make sure all is well and provide any suggestions that might be helpful, if needed.

The Annex Cat Rescue's motto is "Cat Adoption with a Difference." If the adoption does not work out (a rare occurrence, in part due to our excellent "match-making"!), whatever the reason, the cat will always be welcomed back to our organization. We want the best for our kitties!
