My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Solange is about 2 years old. She is predominantly a toy poodle, but mixed with something else unknown. Solange has very curly beige hair, darker tan ears, and weighs 7 pounds 8 ounces. She is very healthy, active and friendly towards new people and kids. She is gentle, loving and a really great lap dog. She is good with meeting new people, dogs and seems to ignore cats (so far).

As a rescue we do not know a dog's history, and sometimes we come across dogs that respond to situations in strange ways. We end up having to try and guess what 'may' have happened in order to move forward and correct any given problem or behavior. For example, maybe Solange was abandoned after living very closely with her previous owner, perhaps the owner carried her everywhere she went and then suddenly died leaving Solange perplexed because other humans weren't treating her the same way, maybe Solange was attacked by another dog and her scream got the attention she needed and she adapted this scream to getting attention for other things as well. Who knows what may have happened.

As you may have already guessed, this is what Solange does if she is left alone -- she panics that she's being abandoned and screams like she is being killed. It breaks your heart. As a foster home we have been working with her to try and correct the behavior, and we have been successful to a degree. In Solange's case, we have made tremendous progress because she is very smart. If Solange does not get the response she wants by doing this scream, then she will stop -- and that's a big improvement. But for we humans who have neighbors close by, this behavior is not well tolerated, even once, by the neighbors. Although we have made progress, it will take some time to completely correct this behavior, so it makes it difficult unless you have some 'space' surrounding your home to allow Solange time to unlearn this behavior in a 'positive' way. This is why we ask that an adopter have a home with some space around it, and not in close proximity to neighbors.

She does not scream in her foster home when a human is home, as we have been working very hard with her and she has improved dramatically (dogs or cats in residence are not humans and don't help her at all). She can now feel comfortable with closed doors between herself and her human, and if her human goes outside she is ok. It is just when she is left alone for any length of time she starts to get scared. We do think this too will pass when she becomes less and less afraid of abandonment. So your coming and going and always coming back to her will eventually build up her confidence and become 'normal' to her. We just haven't reached that point yet in her reconditioning, and she may slip back with rehoming if the adopter gives her attention when she screams like this. This behavior needs to be totally ignored, not even eye contact or sounds. Praise and treats when she communicates in a way that you like. With time she will be perfect. She is a pleaser and all she wants is to get along and be happy. But for now, she wants to be with her human as much as is humanly possible. A stay-at-home person would be perfect for her.

On another note, Solange is submissive to other dogs when she first meets them but is actually the dominant member and queen bee. She protects her food bowl and does not share. She does well with visiting dogs, but on a daily basis would prefer to be the only resident 'lap' dog. She doesn't seem to have any interest in cats other than curiosity which is good. She is quick on her feet and will run through the door but she doesn't go anywhere as she wants to be in your arms. Her light weight makes her easy to carry and she obviously likes this.

All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, vet checked, current on vaccinations, microchipped, groomed, de-wormed, de-flea'd, and come with a collar, leash, ID tag, and puppy kisses from the lucky dog you take home!

If you are interested in meeting and possibly adopting Solange, the first step is to submit an adoption application. Please go to our website www.k9bestfriendsforever.com and click on Adopt which will take you to our online application form.
