My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Breed: Great Dane
DOB: Oct 2011
Sex: Spayed Female
Weight: 110 pounds

Please meet Carly, a beautiful and lovable Great Dane girl. Carly had a family when she was younger but they had intact dogs and Carly and the other female dog didn't get along (we assume breeders, as it appears that Carly had a litter) so Carly ended up at a shelter. She was nervous and wasn’t doing well there in a kennel so that is how we got her.
Carly is a great dog...for the right home. The right home means an experienced large breed home, and preferably a single lady - or more bluntly put...no men!
She is, unfortunately, deathly afraid of men. She has been in our home almost five months and she is still deathly afraid of the man of the house. She will approach him for attention but only if he is seated. If he is up and walking around or talking, she is all eyes on him. If he looks at her, she moves away. If he gets loud (during football, etc) she wont go anywhere near him. If shes eating dinner and he is anywhere but seated, she wont even finish her meal. If she is outside off leash she will not come to him at all...but will run the other way. Unfortunately she may never get over this. If she does...it will take a LOT of time. She even refuses to take treats from him. The other dogs line up and she runs back to observe. If I, the mom, get in between the two of them and she only sees his hand, she may...but not every time.
This is very unfortunate for her, as it is going to be very difficult to find the right home for her...with no men in the picture. If there is a man in the picture, he must be very very aware that this dog isn't going to love him, or even like him, maybe not ever, but hopefully, in time. But this hasn't been the case at our home.
She is completely house trained and does refuse to go in a crate. When she puts the brakes on, it’s hard to get her to change her mind. She may steal the occasional food off the counter..if it’s in her reach. We are working on those manners. She is a doll in the house - wants nothing more than to snuggle on the couch or next to you on a bed. She gets fed last and is patient while waiting her turn. She will even sit and wait if asked.
She is a little pushy on leash, which we will also work on. She will accept correction easily. She knows sit, down, off, come, and no – basic commands that she is great at!
She loves playing with other dogs but has absolutely no idea of her size. I don't let her play with other dogs outside, except our Great Dane, and she has flattened our Dane twice, just by plowing into her. She’s not trying to be mean. She is just an oaf.
She is also very vocal. She loves her voice. She talks to us in the house and barks like crazy when she is outside playing, either with another dog or by herself. Even if she’s running around with a toy, she’s barking at it. VERY amusing to watch!!
She is an excellent watch dog as she barks at everyone who attempts to come close to the home.
She is excellent with cats and children. Not a mean bone in her.
We have a small hobby farm, and she loves to run the fence line and bark at the goats and chickens...but she will call off of them as well.
Carly will require a kind home with either country property or a fenced yard...but keep in mind, if she’s in a fenced yard, she will bark at the neighbors walking by...I am sure that in time she could learn to keep her vocals to herself, but she definitely enjoys her voice.
We have small dogs as well, and because of her Oaf-ness, I do not advise having her loose with small dogs...she wont eat them, but she surely could injure them.
She definitely enjoys having a sibling to play with, but keep in mind that she is large, so her sibling should be of similar size or at least similar rudeness. :) and knowing her past history, it would be best if she had a brother.
